THE SHORT STORY

A Trace Willhoite three-run home run propelled Lipscomb Baseball to its sixth-straight ASUN victory on Saturday as it defeated Eastern Kentucky 6-4 to take the weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Eastern Kentucky found the barrel early and took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run for the lead after the top of the first.

After going down in order in the bottom of the first, Lipscomb's offense got things going in the bottom of the second to cut its deficit in half. Trace Willhoite got things going with his first of three hits of the night with a two-out single. John Shields plated him with an RBI triple to cut the EKU lead 2-1.

After a scoreless third, The Colonels added a run each in the top of the fourth and fifth to extend its lead 4-1.

Lipscomb's bats caught fire in the bottom of the third when Lundgrin led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Malik Williams singled to put Willhoite to the plate as the potential tying run. Willhoite took advantage with a 435-foot home run over the left field fence to quickly tie things up 4-4.

Noah Thompson took over in relief in the top of the fifth and kept Lipscomb's momentum going defensively throwing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

The Bisons kept the offense hot in the bottom of the seventh when Caleb Ketchup singled through the left side with one out. After Ketchup advanced to third on an attempted double steal and Lundgrin walked, Malik Williams delivered an RBI single up the middle, giving the Bisons a 5-4 advantage. Lipscomb loaded the bases with a pair of outs and Willhoite notched another RBI with a four-pitch walk for a 6-4 lead after seven innings.

EKU led off the eighth inning with a single, but Hayden Frank forced a double play and Patrick Williams came in and got the final out of the inning to preserve the two-out lead heading into the top of the ninth.

Closer Trey Nordmann shut the door on the Colonels with three-straight outs in the top of the ninth to seal the 6-4 victory and series win.

HERD NOTES
  • Willhoite went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a walk.
  • The Bisons out-hit the Colonels 11-5 on the afternoon.
