THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb cruised to a victory with an offensive explosion in their home opener over Asbury with a 113-74 final in Nashville Saturday afternoon. Derrin Boyd led the Bisons with 26 points, a career best for the guard.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a four-point advantage, which was cut to two (11-9) on a layup by Asbury, the Bisons began to heat up offensively, with an 11-0 run that opened up the ball game, their most extensive scoring run of the first half.
Lipscomb continued to pour it on offensively, shooting an incredible 74-percent from the floor, making 26 of their 35 shot attempts in the first half.
The Bisons were lethal from a distance, connecting on seven of their 16 three-point shots in the first 20 minutes of gameplay.
Derrin Boyd led the charge for the Bisons in the first half with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
TJ Johnson and Owen McCormack also reached double-figures in the first half, each scoring with ten on a combined 7-of-8 shooting, and 3-of-4 from three-point range. The trio was followed by Cody Head, who poured in eight; two of them came on this nifty spin move for a layup on the left side.
The Bisons' hot shooting led them to as much as a 29-point advantage in the first half and a 64-35 score at the break.
The Bisons' bench provided a healthy spark, scoring 31 points in the first half, with six of the seven players that saw action on the bench finding the bottom of the net.
Jason Mongomery was one of those players off the bench who produced for the Bisons, scoring six of his 12 points in the first half, two of which came on this midrange fade away jumper.
Lipscomb continued to have their way on the offensive end in the second half, shooting 51.6-percent in the period on 16-of-31 shooting. They topped their three-point prowess from the first half, connecting on nine triples in the second.
The Bisons expanded their lead to as much as 41 down the stretch, outscoring the Eagles 49-39 in the second half, resulting in a 113-74 victory in their first game in front of a massive home crowd during Bison Weekend.
