HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb looked to take down a top-75 RPI team in Evansville on the road but could not string together hits early. Timely at-bats by the Aces gave them a 9-3 win on their home field despite having just two more hits than the Bisons in Indiana.
After Evansville scored in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder's choice, Lipscomb held the Aces at bay for the subsequent three frames. Unfortunately, the Bisons' bats weren't effective in those innings with just one base knock in those frames.
The Aces would eventually get things going, scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Lipscomb put up their first run of the game in the visitor half of the six when Caleb Ketchup stole second and third, and an error allowed him to race home, but Evansville still held a 5-1 lead entering the seventh.
Lipscomb began their most promising threat in the top of the seventh, starting with a two-out walk from Parks Bouck and then a double by Will Lee down the right-field line to advance Bouck to third. Chaz Bertolani then singled to center field, plating the two runners on and cutting the Bisons' deficit to two scores.
Ketchup would then walk, forcing a pitching change, with a runner on second and first and still two outs. Vergara singled through the left side but Ketchup was thrown out at second bases to end the Bisons' attempts in the seventh.
The Aces responded with a solo home run to right field in the bottom half, pushing their lead back up to three runs. They then rallied off three more hits leading to three more runs, stretching their run total to nine.
Lipscomb put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth but could not plate more runs to cut into their six-run deficit. As a result, Evansville took the midweek matchup over Lipscomb 9-3 in Indiana. The Aces outhit the Bisons 8-6, while Coach Forehand's ball club left six runners on base.
