HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb held off a ninth inning comeback effort by the Bruins to sneak past Belmont 8-7 on the road.
Neither team could manufacture runs in the first two frames as defense and pitching controlled the first two frames.
Lipscomb broke the scoring drought in the top of the third inning with four runs. Parks Bouck opened the Bisons' threat with a bunt single. Will Lee then walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Chaz Bertolani also walked to load the bases.
The speedy Caleb Ketchup took the plate and delivered on a slow grounder to the shortstop. Ketchup beat out the throw, allowing Bouck to score and the other runners to advance.
After a flyout in the next at-bat, Trace Willhoite found the deep left-field grass for a two-RBI double to increase the Bisons' lead to four runs.
Belmont got three runs back in the fourth on a single through the left side, and a sacrifice fly to center field for a 4-3 score after four innings of play.
Lipscomb put up a three-spot of their own in the top half of the fifth. A pitch hit Bertolani to start the inning, and then Ketchup notched his second hit against the Bruins on a single to left center. After a pop-out, Mason Lundgrin doubled to left center to score two runs.
Willhoite earned his third RBI of the afternoon on a bunt down the first base line, which scored Ketchup from third and gave Lipscomb a 6-3 advantage.
The Bruins got one back in the home half on a wild pitch, but the Bisons continued to answer, scoring a run in the top of the six on a wild pitch with a runner on third.
Belmont clawed back in the bottom of the ninth to plate three runs with two outs, but Lipscomb managed to hold off the Bruins for an 8-7 decision.
Alex Brewer earned the win on the hill after throwing two innings with four strikeouts.
