NASHVILLE - Lipscomb baseball survived a ninth-inning scare to even the weekend series with FGCU (20-21, 12-8 ASUN) with a 7-6 Saturday win at Ken Dugan Field.
The Bisons held the Eagle's scoreless and had a seven-run lead before FGCU put a six-spot on the board in the ninth, but with the tying run at the plate, Lipscomb's reliever Collin Witzke earned three-pitch strikeouts to close out the game and even the series at a game apiece.
Lipscomb broke the game open in the second, scoring five runs on five hits in the inning. David Coppege was responsible for the first runs scored with an RBI single to left center to bring around Austin Kelly. Then, Adam Fallon singled through the right side, which allowed Coppedge to score for the second run.
Alex Vergara capped off the inning with a three-run no-doubter, his 15th of the year, to take back the team lead and put the Bisons up 5-0 through two complete frames.
The Bisons' starting pitcher and reigning ASUN Pitcher of the Week, Jake Poindexter, shut down the Eagles in his six innings of work while Lipscomb added more insurance in the eighth on a two-run double from Freshman Jacob Tobias and took a 7-0 lead into the ninth.
FGCU did not go away without a fight, scoring six runs on two RBI singles followed by a grand slam all with two outs in the ninth. Fortunately, Lipscomb held on, ending the game with a strikeout from Collin Witzke to seal the deal and force a winner-take-all game three tomorrow.
