DELAND, Fla. - Lipscomb baseball fell to Jacksonville 6-5 Thursday night as the Dolphins rallied in the eighth with a five-spot to stun the Bisons and end their 2024 season.
Lipscomb's starting pitcher, Michael Dunkelberger, had a outstanding outing in his final time on the mound as a Bison, but it wasn't enough as the Dolphins caught fire late a stolen the game in the last three innings.
The Bisons got the scoring going in the top of the third, starting the frame with singles from Carter Richey and Adam Fallon at the bottom of the order. Alex Vergara laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, which gave Mason Lundgrin the opportunity with just one out to put the Bisons in front.
Lundgrin delivered with an RBI single to left field to give Lipscomb a 1-0 advantage. Trace Willhoite then collected his 61st RBI of the season on a short ground out back to the pitcher to put the Bisons up 2-0 in the third.
A fielding error by Jacksonville's second basemen allowed Richey to reach for the second time and brought home Will Lee from third.
Jacksonville got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a single through the left side with one out, but Dunkelberger was able to manufacture his way out of the innings with a ground out and then a punch out to close out his stellar outing.
The Bisons added two insurance runs in the eighth, the first coming on an RBI single from Fallon. During the next at-bat, on Fallon's attempt to steal second, two throwing errors by the Jacksonville catcher allowed Fallon to reach home to give Lipscomb a 5-1 advantage.
Jacksonville rallied to take the lead with a five-run eighth inning on three hits, leaving Lipscomb with three outs to work with, down 6-5.
The Bisons got the go-ahead run to the plate, but unfortunately, Lipscomb's season fell to the hands of the Dolphins.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Starting pitcher Michael Dunkelberger went six complete innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
- Dunkelberger outing was the longest appearance of the season for the graduate lefty.
- Will Lee and Adam Fallons were the multi-hit men for the Bisons.
- Lipscomb will finish the season with a 22-34 overall record.
