Women's Basketball Routs Sewanee in Home Opener

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University women's basketball team defeated the University of the South, familiarly known as Sewanee, by a 105-46 score to open the home schedule on Thursday inside Allen Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons connected on the first seven points of the game after field goals by Taylor Bowen and Hannah Richardson before Molly Heard's triple at the 8:46 mark. 

Lipscomb used a 10-2 run in the final run of the first quarter to lead 28-10. 

The Bisons shot 11-of-21 from the floor in the opening quarter, led by nine points by Heard and eight from Bowen. Meanwhile, the Bison defense held the Tigers to two field goals. 

In the second, Lipscomb held Sewanee to five points on 2-of-14 shooting as the lead swelled to 37 points, 52-15, at the half. 

The Bisons kept the foot on the gas pedal in the third quarter with nine points in the paint thanks to five thefts, including two each from Hope Counts and McKayla Miller to lead 81-24 after three quarters. 

For the game, the Bisons scored 33 points off of Sewanee's 27 turnovers. Additionally, Lipscomb's 19 offensive rebounds saw 33 second chance points in the win.

KEY STATISTICS
Taylor Bowen led the way with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and added 10 rebounds for the double-double. 

Hope Counts matched a school record in steals in a game with six to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks. 

Molly Heard connected on 5-of-7 from the floor for 17 points and dished out five dimes, while Hannah Richardson totaled 14 points and eight rebounds. 

Olivia Vinson and Maris Zurliene each scored 13 for the Bisons in the win. Zurliene added nine boards and three thefts, while Vinson contributed eight boards. 

HERD NOTES
Thursday's contest marked the first time since 2002 that Sewanee was on the schedule. 

The Bisons added this game in the record books, hitting the top five in a plethora of categories:
  • 59-point margin of victory: fifth all-time
  • 15 points allowed in the first half: tied for fifth-fewest in a first half
  • 38 field goals made - tied for second-most
  • 16 steals - tied for third-most
