LEXINGTON, Ky. - For the seventh consecutive year the Lipscomb volleyball program was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with a Team Academic Award for its success in the classroom for the 2019-20 season.
With a combined 3.59 team GPA for 2019-20, the Bisons were one of 227 Division I women's programs honored on Monday.
Lipscomb reached the 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average in each semester during the school year. During the fall semester, the team posted a GPA of 3.50, while raising that number to a 3.68 this past spring.
Lipscomb was joined by North Alabama, Liberty, Kennesaw State, FGCU and Jacksonville as the only indoor teams in 2019-20 from the ASUN Conference to be honored.
In the classroom, the Bisons were led by nine girls who accumulated a GPA of at least a 3.50 or higher. Morgan Elmore, Garrett Joiner and Maddie Phillips led the way, each recording a 4.00 in both semesters.
The AVCA honored a record 1,313 teams this year from both the high school and collegiate ranks across all divisions, breaking the previous record of 1,125 set last year. The award is given to teams that hold an average 3.30 cumulative team GPA during the academic year on a 4.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,125.
