Men's Tennis splits opening weekend of ASUN action

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb men's tennis took the court against ASUN Conference opponents for the first time in more than 23 months over the weekend, splitting home contests with Bellarmine and Liberty.

The Bisons (5-5, 1-1 ASUN) earned a 5-2 victory on Saturday against the Knights, before dropping a 5-2 decision with the Flames on Sunday.

After the weekend opener got pushed back a day due to a wet court, Lipscomb wasted little time in jumping on top of Bellarmine when they finally got going. The Bisons won the doubles point for a fourth-straight match, securing victories on all three courts.

Lipscomb's top tandem of Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe ousted BU's Ian Deiters and Paul Reynolds 6-4. Clinching the point would be court three, where Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto and Jake Penny earned a 6-2 win, before Pablo Caffarena and Maksim Bogdanovich brought home a 6-4 decision to put the purple and gold on top, 1-0.

In singles play, the Bisons came out firing to win the first four pairings and secure the match victory.

Uribe dominated on court four to win 6-0, 6-0 over Sam Rueff, before Ortegon swept his match 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. It was his third straight-set victory of the season.

Junior Jake Penny earned the clinch point on court six behind a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Caffarena rounded out the scoring for the Bisons on the top line winning 7-5, 6-1.

The Knights had to win tiebreakers in each of their pairings at No. 3 and No. 5 to get on the board.

On Sunday, facing a Liberty team that was receiving votes in the latest ITA Top-50 ranking, the Bisons found themselves in a 3-0 hole and was unable to get the comeback.

After the Flames (11-5, 2-0 ASUN) took the first doubles on court one, the Bisons No. 3 pairing of Garcia-Nieto and Penny fought to a 6-4 victory to split the decision and send it to the final matchup.

Caffarena and Bogdanovich entered the day with six straight victories when teamed together, but were unable to get over on top in a 6-4 loss on court two.

Liberty carried the momentum into singles, where it won the first two games. Uribe won a hard-fought battle at No. 4 to get the Bisons on the board 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Caffarena then toughed out a three-set thriller on the top line 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to cut the Flames lead to 3-2.

Liberty would end up taking back-to-back 6-0, 6-2 decisions at No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match victory.
