Men's Tennis blanks UNA to advance to ASUN semifinals

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men's tennis team opened the ASUN Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over the North's No. 3 seed North Alabama Friday afternoon on campus at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.

The Bisons (9-6) have earned a trip to Jacksonville, Florida for the ASUN semifinals. It marks just the third appearance in the final four for the Lipscomb program, and its first since a run to the title match in 2017. Their matchup will be determined after Saturday's results around the league.

"I'm so proud of this team," head coach Geoff Hernandez said. "Every program around the nation has been through so much this year, but we have all found a way. North Alabama is a classy program and did everything they could to make this match as tough as possible, but this team has something special.

"We have earned the chance to play the best in our conference down in Florida. We will be brave and fight for Lipscomb. I won't single anyone out today because it really was a group effort. We are locked in and ready. I love of these boys."

Lipscomb got started with solid doubles play, just as it did in the previous two matchups with the Lions (4-14) this season.

Pablo Caffarena and Maksim Bogdanovich finished first with a 6-3 win over UNA at the No. 2 position. Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe then clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the top position. Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto and Jake Penny led 5-4 on court three when their match was halted.

It marked the 10th doubles victory for Lipscomb this season, including the fifth against ASUN opponents.

The Bisons cleaned up and made quick work of UNA in singles, winning the first three points to win the match.

Uribe finished his match in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead overall from the No. 4 position. Bogdanovich then followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) sweep on court three to give the purple and gold a match point.

Salas-Tulla wrapped up the victory in straight sets at No. 6 with a score of 6-2, 7-5 to advance the Bisons to the semifinals.
