Men's Tennis Wraps Up Opening Weekend of Fall Competition

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Lipscomb men's tennis opened its fall campaign over the weekend at the Coach Dale Short Shootout, winning a pair of doubles and giving the team needed live action reps.

The Bisons competed in three matches over three days against Middle Tennessee, Belmont and Louisville.

In the opener on Friday, the Bisons split doubles action with No. 1 duo Sam Fischer and Alex Mesquida defeating MT's Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Joh Chin, 6-4. The Blue Raiders rallied from an early 0-2 deficit to win the other doubles (6-2), and then went on to take all four singles.

On Saturday against the Bruins, the purple and gold got another doubles win, this time from the No. 2 pairing of Carlos Salas-Tulla and Jake Penny, as they knocked off Belmont's Grant Kelly and Taisei Miyamoto 6-3. Lipscomb also got its first singles win of the fall on the fourth line as Mesquida took care of Kelly in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

In the weekend's finale on Sunday, the tandem of Salas-Tulla and Penny managed to earn the only win of the day for the Bisons in doubles, 6-3. The Cardinals won 6-1 in the other doubles and took 3-of-4 singles in straight sets. Fischer grabbed an early lead in the first set, 6-3, at the top singles position, but Louisville's Matthew Fung came from behind to win 6-2 in each of the next two sets.

"This was an important start to our season," head coach Geoff Hernandez said. "Results were not quite what we wanted, but the information gained was important. I made it clear to the guys that this event was all about growth.

"For Sam and Alex, we got the much needed competition in. Both showed some really good stuff throughout the weekend. For Carlos and Jake, we really focused on game style and knowing that we have to keep pushing forward with being aggressive on court. All four guys have plenty of opportunities this fall and I think we will be ready to compete better right away."
