Long ball sinks men's basketball at Liberty, 78-69

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Unable to withstand an onslaught of three-pointers from Liberty, the Lipscomb men's basketball team dropped a 78-69 decision at Liberty Arena Tuesday night in Lynchburg.

The loss dropped Lipscomb to 10-16 overall and 3-8 in ASUN play, while Liberty improved to 18-7 and 9-1.

Ahsan Asadullah reeled in his ninth double-double of the season, while Jacob Ognacevic and Tommy Murr each added 11 points off the bench, but it wasn't enough to even out 17 three-pointers from the Flames and a combined 53 points from Darius McGhee and Kyle Rode.

The Bisons got back-to-back buckets from Parker Hazen and Ahsan Asadullah in the first two minutes of the game to go in front 4-2, but from that point on it was all Liberty in the first half.
 

The Flames connected on three-consecutive 3-pointers to take an 11-4 lead before the purple and gold got another point.

Despite an onslaught of triples from Liberty, the Bisons were able to stay within six to seven points with six straight makes from the paint and free throws.

After starting 0-for-6 from long distance, Tanner Shulman buried the first long ball for the Bisons at the 2:19 mark before Quincy Clark got on the board with a basket at the rim to cut Liberty's lead to nine at 33-24.
 

Despite having a chance to get it to single digits before heading into the locker room, the Flames got another triple, two free throws and a buzzer beater from the nation's leading three-point threat Darius McGhee to give Liberty a 41-24 lead at the break.

The Bisons shot just 34.5 percent overall (10-29) and made just 1-of-7 deep shots (14.3%). The Flames on the other hand, shot 53.6 percent (15-28) and made 9-of-16 threes (56.3%).

Lipscomb came out with some momentum, scoring the first four points to cut the deficit to 11, but a 7-2 run from the Flames pushed their advantage to 16.

The Bisons offense got rolling and kept them in the game. Over an 8-minute stretch, Lipscomb connected on 8-of-9 field goals, including a pair of triples from Greg Jones and Tommy Murr. They eventually cut their deficit to eight points with under nine minutes to play at 60-52, but every time Lipscomb got it that close, the Flames would make another three-pointer.

Trailing by 13 with 2:37 to play, the purple and gold got three 3-pointers from Will Pruitt and a driving layup from Murr to get back to within seven points with 41 seconds to play.
 

The Flames sealed it with a pair of free throws.
 

NOTES
  • The Bisons shot 47.4 percent from the floor (27-57) after torching the nets for a 60.7-percent clip in the second half (17-28).
  • Liberty also shot 47.4 percent, but nailed 17 threes – their second most in a game this season.
  • The 17 triples allowed matched a season high for the Bisons (17 – Belmont).
  • Asadullah finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists – all team highs. He passed Josh Williams (2013-17) on Lipscomb's NCAA-era scoring list to stand 6th all-time with 1,511.
  • Greg Jones recorded seven points, and matched his career high with seven rebounds while adding three assists.
  • Lipscomb outscored Liberty in the second half, 43-37.
  • The Bisons outscored the Flames 29-2 from the bench and 40-20 from the paint.
