Cross Country Teams Finish Fifth at NCAA Regional Championship

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb cross country traveled to the Sunshine State Friday to compete in the 2023 NCAA South Regional Championships. The women's team kicked things off first at 7:30am CT with a 6K race followed by the men at 8:30am CT with a 10K race. Both teams claimed fifth place overall, the women with 107 total points and the men with 158 total points.

The women got off to a hot start in Gainesville, sitting in second place as a team through the first two splits as all seven competing Bisons crossed the 1,000m mark in the top-20. As the runners moved through the next two splits, the Bisons continued their hot pace with Miller holding ninth place overall through 2,460m as the squad moved to fifth place in the team standings.

The last two splits before the final 6,000m mark came and went quickly and the Bisons solidified their place in the top-five teams as Kiara Carter moved into the lead for Lipscomb and up into the top-10 overall. Carter flew through the finish line ninth overall with a time of 18:54.5, joined in the top-20 by Miller with a 19:07.6 to claim 18^th overall.

Freshman Harley Kletz crossed the line 24^th overall with a 19:15.9, followed closely by Mackenzie Barnett (19:25.6) and Colbi Borland (19:37.7) in 27^th and 29^th, respectively, to close out the Bisons scoring group and secure a team fifth-place finish with 107 points, just nine points behind the fourth-place finishing Alabama. Liza Corso clocked a 19:54.9 to finish 37^th overall and Ellie Brewer finished 43^rd overall with a time of 20:04.3 to conclude Lipscomb Women's Cross Country's run at the 2023 NCAA South Regional Championships.

The men's team kicked off with a quick pace, moving into seventh place as a team through the first two splits with Braedon Palmer taking the lead for the Bisons in seventh place overall through the first mile. The Bisons pushed on through the next two splits, sitting in eighth place just over 3,000m through the race.

The Bisons moved back up into seventh place as the race continued through the halfway mark with Owen Horevay and Bryan Hernandez moving to lead the Herd in 15^th and 16^th place overall. Through the 7,560m split, the Bisons held their team sixth place spot, just three points off of fellow ASUN competitor North Florida.

The squad turned up the heat in the final 2,000m of the race, moving up the ranks to sit in fourth place at the 8,730m split. Lipscomb's squad held strong through the finish with a total of 158 points to finish fifth as a team behind Tennessee, Florida State, Alabama, and Ole Miss and sitting 11 points ahead of UNF.

Brady Johnson led the Purple and Gold across the finish line with a time of 29:26.9 to finish 16^th overall out of 168 runners in the 10K. Ben Butcher was the next Bison to the finish with a 29:38.0 to finish 22^nd overall followed by Braedon Palmer (29:53.6) and Owen Horevay (30:04.0) in 32^nd and 35^th respectively for the Purple and Gold.

Bryan Hernandez rounded out the squad's scoring group, finishing 54^th overall with a time of 30:41.2 to total 158 points and claim fifth place as a team. Levi Streeval (30::54.3) and James Schmidt (30:57.6) brought things home for the Bisons in 64^th and 65^th, respectively.

The 2023 NCAA Cross Country National Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 18^th in Charlottesville, Va. The women's 6K will begin at 9:20am CT followed by the men's 10K at 10:10am CT. The final list of entrants for the meet will be announced Saturday, Nov. 11^th in the NCAA selection show beginning at 4:00pm CT.
