DELAND, Fla. - In game one of Lipscomb Baseball's series with Stetson (14-9, 2-2 ASUN), the Bisons fell after giving up five runs in the bottom of the ninth to drop their third straight ASUN contest 9-8 to the Hatters on sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bisons put their first two batters on in the opening inning on a single from Alex Vergara and a walk from Mason Lundgrin. After a deep fly out to right field by Trace Willhoite, which moved Vergara to third, Austin Kelly roped a single to center field to score the game's first run.
Lipscomb added another in the first on a single to Carter Richey to go up 2-0 after one frame of action.
In the fourth inning, David Coppedge launched his first homer of the year on a solo shot to left field to put the Bisons up 3-0.
The Bisons added two more in the fourth on a rare two-RBI sacrifice fly from Willhoite, putting up Lipscomb's fourth and fifth runs of the night.
Stetson got a run back in the home half of the fourth on a double to left field as the Bisons took a 5-1 advantage into the fifth.
Lipscomb started adding insurance in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on an RBI double down the right-field line from Austin Kelly, his second hit and RBI of the day. Parks Bouck then grounded into a double play, but with no outs, Willhoite scored from third to put the Bisons up 7-1.
Alex Brewer got the start and held the Hatters in check, holding Stetson to just one run through the first seven frames, but Stetson scored three runs in the eighth on two RBI singles and a wild pitch to reduce the Bisons' lead to three. The Hatters then scored five runs in the ninth to steal a victory from the Bisons in game one.
