NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University baseball team was unable to complete a come-from-behind rally over West Virginia University, falling to the Mountaineers, 5-4, Saturday afternoon from Ken Dugan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WVU saw the first two runners reach on back-to-back singles, but
Jake Poindexter caught both Alex Marot and Kyle West napping on called third strikes to get the momentum back to the Bisons. Grant Hussey flew out to left to end the early threat.
Lipscomb's bats responded with the defense's strong start, as
Parks Bouck launched his first homer of the season with a two-run shot to left field.
The Mountaineers cashed in a lead-off single in the second to make it 2-1.
After a RBI single in the fourth to tie it, West Virginia took the lead with an RBI knock by Marot.
In the bottom of the fifth, a lead-off dinger by
Casey Sunseri made things even again at three runs apiece.
Lipscomb saw back-to-back singles from
Damion Kenealy Jr. and Sunseri to put the go-ahead run in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the Bisons threat.
Following the Mountaineers getting off the field with their defense, their offense responded in the sixth with a go-ahead sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Michael Perazza.
In the eighth, WVU added a key insurance run to make it a 5-3 score. It proved to be key for the visitors, as a Kenealy long ball with two outs in the bottom of the frame trimmed the deficit to 5-4.
Lipscomb saw a lead off single by
Aaron Stelogeannis to start the bottom of the ninth, but the Mountaineers prevailed with back-to-back outs via the air to take the victory.
KEY STATISTICS
Three Bisons went yard on Saturday, as
Parks Bouck,
Damion Kenealy Jr. and
Casey Sunseri all hit home runs.
Aaron Stelogeannis posted a two-hit game at the top of the order, while
Casey Sunseri went 3-for-4.
Jake Poindexter started on the mound, going 4.2 innings. All four of his punchouts were of the looking variety, and all came off of his fastball.
