Walk This Way: Baseball Shows Great Plate Discipline with Walk-Off Walk to Defeat Memphis

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University baseball team took advantage of the University of Memphis's mistakes late, as back-to-back hit-by pitches and back-to-back walks by the Tigers bullpen helped lift the Bisons to a 4-3 win in 10 innings, Wednesday afternoon from Ken Dugan Field.

Final Score: Lipscomb 4, Memphis 3 (10 innings)
Location: Ken Dugan Field
Records: Lipscomb (6-13), Memphis (11-9)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the second inning, after a lead-off walk, Creek Robertson put the Tigers on the board first with a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run.

However, Lipscomb answered in the bottom half of the frame with a run of its own. After David Coppedge opened the inning with a single, he moved to third after two miscues by the Tigers right fielder that saw Coppedge at third base with nobody out.

He wouldn't be there for long, as Damion Kenealy brought him home on an RBI groundout to make it a 1-1 score.

After Memphis had two runners on in top of the fourth, Cole O'Brien got out of the jam with a called third strike.

In the bottom half of the frame, the momentum moved to the bat racks for the Bisons, as Coppedge started the inning with a leadoff single. On the next pitch, Kenealy successfully completed the hit and run to perfection and the Bisons had runners on the corners.

Keaton Mahan followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bisons the 2-1 lead to score Coppedge.

Following a Kenealy stolen base, Kai Holm brought him home on an RBI single and improved the lead to 3-1.

Moving ahead to the sixth, the Tigers were able to get back even on a two-run double by Justin Fogel.

Memphis had an opportunity to reclaim the lead in the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs. Collin Bosley-Smith came out of the bullpen and used an eight-pitch at bat that saw seven straight foul balls by Shane Cox. However, it was Bosley-Smith that had the last laugh, as he got Cox to swing and miss to keep the game square at three.

In the eighth, Jake Berg gunned down two runners at second base to help keep the game even. Berg's second tag of second base was reviewed, but the call was upheld to get the defense out of the jam.

However, Jonah Sutton followed suit in the bottom half. With another opportunity for a hit-and-run for Kenealy, he was unsuccessful, as he struck out with Sutton firing down to second to complete the double play.

In the ninth, following a two-out single and walk to load the sacks, a chopper to Coppedge behind the third base line and fired a strike to first base to escape the jam.

Moving to the bottom of the ninth, the Bisons took advantage of control issues by the Memphis bullpen. Mahan led off the frame with a walk, and after a sac bunt by Holm, Jacob Tobias was intentionally walked to bring up Brady Miller with two outs. The freshman used an eight-pitch at bat to coax the third walk of the inning to load the bases. However, the Tigers got out of the jam with a flyout to force extra innings.

With a runner on third and two outs, Brock Puckett went upstairs on Sutton to strike him out to get the Lipscomb bats up.

However, the Bisons did not need the bats, as Parks Bouck and David Coppedge were both hit by a pitch to start the inning. Following a passed ball to move the runners up 90 feet, Memphis decided to put Kenealy at first with their second intentional walk in as many innings. Mahan was up again. Eight pitches later, he looked at a pitch inside to score the winning run and help the Bisons to the walk-off win via the bases-loaded walk.

That final inning by the Tigers pitching staff saw 20 pitches, with 11 coming outside the strike zone.
