NASHVILLE – Lipscomb Men's Basketball and head coach Kevin Carroll announced the addition of Derek Brooks to the staff on Wednesday. Brooks will serve as assistant coach on Carroll's staff.
Brooks has nearly a decade of collegiate coaching experience, most recently serving on the staff at his alma mater, Air Force, for the past two seasons. Prior to coaching at Air Force, Brooks was an assistant coach at Siena after a stint on the men's basketball staff at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He also previously coached at both the AAU and high school levels.
His collegiate coaching career began with a three-year stint as a women's basketball assistant at Air Force. During this role, he was responsible for managing the Falcons' recruiting, planning, training and scouting reports.
During his playing career, Brooks was a four-year letterwinner for the Falcons from 2007-11. He captained the 2010-11 team that earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Following his senior season, he earned the highest honor an Air Force Men's Basketball player can achieve in the Bob Spear Award. The award is presented to the student athlete that is outstanding in all areas of the Academy – academics, athletics and military performance.
After graduation, Brooks was a member of the bronze medal winning 2011 All-Armed Forces team at the International SHAPE Tournament in Mons, Belgium. He also competed for the All-Air Force Team in 2012 which won the gold medal at the 2012 Armed Forces Chmpionships.
Brooks is a 2011 Air Force graduate who rose to the level of Captain in the United States Air Force. He began his professional career as a financial management officer at Hanscom Air Force Base for three years. During that time, he served as the head coach of the Middlesex Magic AAU program's U-17, U-14 and U-11 teams from 2012-14, and was also the assistant varsity basketball coach at Thayer Academy for the 2011-12 season.
Brooks and his wife, Lauren, have two children, a daughter, Savannah, and son, Dylan.
