Softball closes weekend with late loss to UNC-Greensboro

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - The Lipscomb softball team closed out the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational with a loss on Sunday afternoon as they fell to UNC-Greensboro 6-2.

The Lady Bisons (5-2) held the Spartans scoreless through six innings, but gave up six runs in the final frame.

Both of Lipscomb’s runs came in the fourth inning.

Junior Khayla Green singled and then stole second before scoring on freshman Caitlin Turner’s double to left field.

Senior Abby Fenichel then reached base on an error by the Spartans shortstop, scoring Turner to give Lipscomb a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Greensboro tied it up at two runs apiece with back-to-back RBI singles.

The Spartans proceeded to load the bases, and Makenna Matthijs hit a grand slam to give Greensboro a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lipscomb was able to place runners on the corners, but both were left on base.

Junior Jordan Fortel allowed five runs on six hits through nearly seven innings of work. She shut out the Spartans for six innings before giving up the tying run in the seventh.

Sophomore Chloe Yeager entered in relief of Fortel in the seventh, giving up the grand slam before securing the third out of the inning.

The Lady Bisons finish the weekend with a 3-2 record through the five tournament games.

The Purple and Gold will be back in action with four games at the Samford Invitational this coming weekend.
