Baseball's Casey Bond: Where Are They Now?
11/11/2020 7:33:00 PM | Baseball
He came to Lipscomb when his former college dropped NCAA DI baseball before his senior year, but he found a home here and was drafted one year later by the San Francisco Giants. His baseball skills bolstered a new career when he appeared in "Moneyball" with Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonah Hill, and Chris Pratt. Casey Bond followed that project by producing "My Many Sons," the Don Meyer story, and he hasn't slowed down yet. We learned plenty about this fascinating athlete/actor/producer/entrepreneur when he sat down this week with LipscombSports.com.
What years did you compete for Lipscomb?
I played for the Bisons and Coach Jeff Forehand in 2007.
What teammate was most memorable?
My most memorable teammate was John King. Not only were we friends since middle school, but we also went to two different colleges together and were both drafted by the San Francisco Giants – pretty incredible if you think about those odds … not to mention the fact that we had some truly fun and memorable times in our stint at Lipscomb.
What degree have you earned?
I earned my Management major and Marketing minor from Lipscomb.
Why did you attend Lipscomb?
I was playing at Birmingham Southern College, which was another NCAA Division I program, when they decided to cut all athletic scholarships and move to DIII. They were only the 2nd or 3rd program in the history of the NCAA to drop down from Division I by their choice, and that decision left ALL of the athletes to make a choice to stay and finish their degrees or to find other programs to finish their college athletic careers. Lipscomb was on my radar because Birmingham Southern had played them and I had a friend on their roster. I made a few calls and decided Nashville was a great city and Coach Forehand was the type of guy I would want to play for. I felt certain he would give me a real opportunity to play my senior year, even though I was transferring into a group of players who had been there for a few years already. It helped make my decision easier to know that John King was a part of the "package deal" transferring from BSC and we both were able to finish our college careers together at the same program.
What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?
I have several good memories from my time at Lipscomb, but my favorite is beating Vanderbilt when they were ranked #1 in the country.
Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?
Clearly Coach [Jeff] Forehand was a great mentor. To be honest, he was getting his first year under his belt as well, so it felt as though we were going through the process of trying to make the best of this first year together. In addition, he seemed to very much value the coach I had played for at Birmingham Southern, Coach Brian Shoop. Coach Shoop was a major influence during my time before I arrived at Lipscomb, and his leadership and example spilled over into my new experience at Lipscomb. Both head coaches – Shoop and Forehand – were great supporters of my interest to grow and to lead.
What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?
I didn't live on campus, so my experience was a bit different, but I remember seeing a different vibe and tradition at Lipscomb than the atmosphere to which I was accustomed. After graduating, I found out a lot more about Lipscomb's rich tradition in sports – especially basketball – and the large family of Bison fans who are very kind and who want the best for students.
What are the most valuable lessons you learned in your time at Lipscomb?
Some of the most valuable lessons I learned from Lipscomb came after my time there. I was able to reflect on some of the people I'd met on campus (such as Coach Don Meyer) and to see what type of character they possessed – the type that positively influences others and has so much good to give. I learned that Lipscomb folks are very supportive in many ways, something I realized even more after my schooling was finished.
Who was your favorite professor?
Leanne Smith was my favorite. She had a great sense of humor and was always kind and generous to offer a helpful hand.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Peachtree City, Georgia – a "golf cart" community south of Atlanta.
What do you do now?
I'm an entrepreneur in the film business.
Tell us about your family:
I'm married to the wonderful Stacy Bond, and I'm the father to a goldendoodle named Luna.
