Baseball Begins Season With Series vs. Murray State

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb baseball team is set to make its return to the diamond for the 2021 season this weekend with a three-game series versus Murray State at Dugan Field. The Bisons will open the season with a doubleheader on Sunday, February 21 with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The series finale will be on Monday at 2:00 p.m.

SUNDAY'S DOUBLEHEADER HAS BEEN CANCELED. LIPSCOMB AND MURRAY STATE WILL NOW PLAY A DOUBLEHEADER ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 STARTING AT NOON CT.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
  • Murray State was picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll as voted on by head coaches and SIDs.
  • Senior Jordan Cozart was named a 2020 Collegiate Baseball News Third-Team All-American and a 2021 Collegiate Baseball News Preseason Third-Team All-American.
  • Brock Anderson was selected to the preseason All-OVC team. A year ago, Anderson led the team with eight home runs and 23 RBI, while hitting .274.
  • Burns will get the ball on opening day for the first time in his career. Last season, Burns led the Racers with 24 strikeouts and posted a 1-2 record with a 1.47 ERA over 17.1 innings of work.
HERD NOTES:
  • Lipscomb opens the 2021 season at home for the 12th year in a row at the friendly confines of Dugan Field. Over the past 11 opening day games, the Bisons have gone 7-4 during that stretch.
  • The purple and gold have plenty of new faces on the roster with a total of 14 newcomers joining the squad by way of transfers or freshmen.
  • In the preseason coaches poll, the Bisons were selected to finish fourth.
  • Senior infielder Haddon Adams, sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani, sophomore relief pitcher Tyler Guilfoil and junior outfielder Maddux Houghton were named to the preseason ASUN All-Conference team.
  • Lipscomb led the ASUN with its four selections to the preseason All-Conference team, along with Liberty who also garnered four selections.
  • In addition to his All-Conference selection, Adams also earned preseason Player of the Year honors. The last time a Lipscomb player was named preseason Player of the Year was in 2017 with Michael Gigliotti.
  • Adams returns after ranking in the top-10 in multiple categories in the league last season including: Batting Average (.328 – 6th), Slugging Percentage (.547 – 6th), Hits (21 – 4th), Runs (21 – 1st), RBI (13 – 5th), Home Runs (3 – 5th) and Total Bases (35 – 4th).
  • Bertolani He had the highest batting average for Lipscomb at .364 (4th in the ASUN) collecting 12 hits and four RBI with a team-high OBP of .432 (10th in the ASUN) and .394 slugging percentage. Behind the plate he wasn't afraid to show off his arm with a league-leading six runners caught stealing to go along with a .990 fielding percentage.
  • Guilfoil was positioning himself as one of the best closers not just in the conference, but in the nation last season ranking first in all of Division I in saves (6). Appearing in eight games, the right-handed flamethrower earned a record of 1-0 without ever giving up an earned run for an impressive ERA of 0.00 over 13.0 innings of work. 
  • Houghton commands the Bisons outfield from his center field position. Another five-tool player, Houghton in 16 games last season hit .295 with 18 hits and 11 RBI to go along with a .377 slugging percentage, two doubles and one home run. He also displayed his speed as he went a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen bases, which ranked fifth in the ASUN.
  • Guilfoil and Houghton also garnered preseason honors from Perfect Game as the duo was named to Perfect Game's preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Opening Day starter Noah Thompson, makes his return to the bump after missing all of last season due to injury.
