NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Process over production.

If you concentrate on the process, the production will take care of itself. That is the lesson Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman and her staff have been teaching this week.

"For us right now we keep talking about the growth process," Ryman said. "It is process over production. We need our team to buy into that more than ever.

"It is so easy to get caught up in results…the score of a game, what happens in an inning or an at bat. It is an everyday process whether it be communication, work ethic or execution. You have to take care of the details. If you do those things the product will take care of itself."

The Lady Bisons (5-6) will have the opportunity to put what they have learned into action this weekend in the Purple/Gold Challenge at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium.

Loyola-Chicago from the Missouri Valley Conference and Oakland from the Horizon League are the opponents. Loyola-Chicago is winless in six games. This is the opening weekend of the 2021 season for Oakland, picked fourth in the league's preseason poll.

Friday the Lady Bisons will face Loyola-Chicago at 1:30 and Oakland at 4. Saturday Lipscomb plays Oakland at 1:30 and Loyola-Chicago at 4. Sunday Lipscomb closes out the challenge with an 11 a.m. game with Loyola-Chicago.

Leadoff hitter Amy Vetula leads Lipscomb with a .429 batting average, a six-game hitting streak and five stolen bases. She is tied for second on the team with Olivia Ward with six RBI.

Kamrie Rich is hitting .368 in the clean-up spot with a team high nine RBI and two home runs. She also has a double and triple.

Ward is batting .303 with a one double and one home run.

Both Vetula and Rich have five multi-hit games.

Laine Barefoot (1-2) leads the Lipscomb pitching staff with a 2.10 earned run average. Breanna Burke (3-2) has a 3.11 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 36 innings. Maddie Siemer is 1-0.

Oakland is led in pitching by Sydney Campbell. She was 5-4 with a 1.92 in the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. She struck out 47 batters in 62 innings.

Madison Jones is the top returning hitter for Oakland with a .328 average, four doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Hannah Nalley leads Loyola-Chicago with a .300 batting average.

Sydney Ruggles (0-3) has posted a 3.64 ERA.

"We are expecting nice weather this weekend," Ryman said. "This is a great opportunity for us to get back on track against some quality teams. We are looking forward to being back home."
