Box Score NASHVILLE – Consistent offense and stifling defense lead Lipscomb Baseball to a 4-2 decision over App State Saturday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field.
Dylan Bierman had arguably his best outing all season in his fourth start. He threw a season-high seven innings allowing just two runs on four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
App State took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a solo home run.
Lipscomb quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the first.
Tiger Borom worked a leadoff walk and
Robbie Merced followed with a double to give the Bisons some momentum.
Malik Williams then delivered a ground ball that was enough for Borom to cross home plate and even things 1-1.
Both defenses settled in through the next three innings putting zeroes on the board.
Lipscomb expanded its lead 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth which started with a double by
Maddux Houghton.
A sacrifice bunt pushed Houghton to scoring position and he then scored the second Lipscomb run of the day when he slid under the tag at home plate for a 2-1 score.
The final Bisons runs of the night came when
Malik Williams scorched a ball down the left field line to balloon the lead 4-1.
The Mountaineers threatened in the top of the eighth when they scored a run, but Lipscomb quickly stopped the bleeding to keep a 4-2 lead.
Matthew Maldonado picked up his first save of the season as he shutout App State in the final inning and a third to preserve the victory.
HERD NOTES
- Bierman retired the mountaineers in order four times.
- Tanner Morgan and Gavin Grubbs both threw a scoreless third of an inning.
- Four of Lipscomb's five hits were for extra bases.
