Long Ball Leads Lipscomb Past Knights

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lipscomb Baseball earned a crucial 5-3 victory over Bellarmine Friday afternoon at Knights Field. The home run ball propelled the Bisons to victory, with three homers in the fifth inning that gave Lipscomb the lead.

Tyler Gulfoil picked up his third save of the season, keeping the two-run lead alive through the final two innings of the game. He struck out three of the seven batters he saw.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bellarmine took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first after blasting two solo home runs.

Lipscomb responded by getting base runners in the second and fourth innings after leadoff doubles from David Graves in both innings. The runners, however, were stranded and the Knights kept the lead.

The Bisons put a run on the board in the top of the fifth. Tiger Borom leadoff with a base knock and eventually scored when Brian Moore laced an RBI single to left field that cut the Bellarmine lead 2-1.

Lipscomb threatened to open things up in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with just one out, but the Knights turned a double play to end the inning and maintain the lead.

Momentum quickly swung Lipscomb's way in the top of the seventh. Haddon Adams single-handedly scored the second run with a solo shot to deep left field, cutting the Bellarmine lead to just a run. The deep ball was contagious as Malik Williams scored two more with a homer of his own to take the first Lipscomb lead of the day (4-3).

For the first time this season, the Bisons had back-to-back home runs when David Graves sent another one out of the park to increase the lead 5-3 before the Bisons would head to the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Guilfoil took over the mound for the Bisons in the bottom of the eighth. After allowing a leadoff walk, he dug in and struck out the tying run at the plate to end the inning.

Needing just three outs to secure the victory, Guilfoil retired the Knights in order in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-3 victory.
