HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons were on full go from the opening whistle, controlling the possession in its attacking half for much of the first minutes. Lipscomb had a few good looks in the first 10 minutes with shots by Jones and
Ploutarchos Alonefti that just missed frame.
Lipscomb continued to keep its foot on the gas pedal and won a ball in its defensive third to set up the goal scoring opportunity.
Luca Naumann found Jones who flew up the right flank to gain possession. Jones crossed a ball to
Javanne Smith just outside the 18-yard box who buried a right-footed shot for a 1-0 Lipscomb lead.
Chances kept coming for the Bisons as Jones earned a penalty kick in the 36' minute.
Jelldrik Dallmann took the spot kick and the Mercer keeper guessed the wrong way, but Dallmann's shot caught the trailing foot of the keeper who was able to barely make the save.
Tyrese Spicer nearly netted another for Lipscomb in the 42' minute when he was one-on-one with his defender and got off a promising left-footed shot, but the ball hit the corner of the left post and the crossbar and banged back into play.
The Bisons were ahead 1-0 at the half and outshot the Bears 11-2 in the first 45 minutes.
Lipscomb was on the attack early in the second frame with several good looks including a 56' minute shot by Spicer that forced yet another save.
Mercer, however, was able to net the equalizer in the 72' minute against the run of play when a long punt pinged around the box and to the feet of a Bear who finished for a 1-1 game.
The Bisons, however, continued to press and after several near goals, regained the lead in the 72' minute. Shortly after entering the match in the second half,
Alejandro Lopez settled the ball in the midfield and found Jones at the left side of the box. Jones weaved through a couple defenders and took a shot from an awkward angle but curled the ball around the keeper and into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Lipscomb's lead increased in the 79' minute when
Adam McAleenan won a ball in Mercer's attacking half and sent a long ball to Lipscomb's side of the pitch. Jones showed his speed again and beat both his defender and the keeper and calmly finished a right-footed shot for his second goal of the night and a 3-1 lead.
Hayes Wood nearly found the back of the net in the 88' minute when he headed a ball on frame, but the shot was picked out of the air by the Bears' keeper for yet another save to keep the Lipscomb lead 3-1.
Lipscomb was able to keep its lead through the final minutes for a 3-1 road result.
