THE SHORT STORY
Early offense and clutch defense lifted Lipscomb Baseball to its fifth-consecutive victory, downing Austin Peay 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Austin Peay got out to an early lead, taking advantage of a Lipscomb error and took a 1-0 lead. The Govs double its lead in the top of the second for an early 2-0 lead.
Malik Williams cut the Austin Peay lead in half in the bottom of the second. with one swing of the bat with a solo home run over the right field fence for a 2-1 deficit.
The Govs threatened to plate more in the top of the third with runners on first and second with two outs, but Chandler Giles got the three outs needed to keep the Lipscomb deficit manageable.
Lipscomb took the lead in the bottom of the third after August Haymaker and Caleb Ketchup connected on back-to-back singles to lead off. Maddux Houghton delivered the game-tying RBI with a sacrifice fly for a 2-2 game. The Bisons mounted a two-out rally and Trace Willhoite delivered an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Williams and RBI double from Rudy Maxwell for a 5-2 lead after three complete innings.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Austin Peay took advantage of a leadoff double in the top of the fifth to plate another, shaving the Lipscomb lead 5-3.
The teams were scoreless in the sixth inning and Tyler Legere hit the mound for the top of the seventh. He gave up a leadoff double, but the runner was eventually thrown out at home plate later in the inning and Legere got the outs needed to keep the 5-3 Lipscomb advantage.
The Bisons stayed quiet offensively for the remainder of the game, but the pitching staff stepped up and shut the Govs out for the final two innings for Lipscomb's fifth-straight victory.

Lipscomb will be back in action for a weekend series against No. 11 Georgia March 11-13. First pitch on Friday in Athens, Ga. Is slated for 5 p.m. CT.
