THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball's season came to an end in the ASUN Semifinal round of the ASUN Tournament Friday afternoon with a 6-4 loss to Kennesaw State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Michael Dunkelberger got off to a good start in his ASUN Semifinal start, retiring Kennesaw State in order in the top of the first with a strikeout. The Bisons started the bottom of the first with a single from
Caleb Ketchup, but the next three were retired as the game was scoreless through the first.
Kennesaw State drew first blood with three runs in the top of the second and a run in the top of the third to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Bisons continued to struggle offensively, being held scoreless through the fifth inning.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Lipscomb's offense got hot in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up. Ketchup started the inning with a leadoff double and quickly scored when
Maddux Houghton singled up the middle. The offense continued when
Mason Lundgrin walked to send
Malik Williams to the plate and he homered for the fourth time in as many games. His three-run blast tied the game 4-4 after the sixth inning.
The Owls punched back in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to retake a 6-4 lead.
Lipscomb got the leadoff men aboard in both the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to drive them across home plate as Kennesaw State took a 6-4 lead into the ninth inning.
Ike Buxton continued a strong relief outing to keep Lipscomb in the game, striking out the side in the top of the ninth to send the game to the bottom of the ninth with the Bisons needing a pair of runs to keep its season alive.
The Bisons got good contact on three balls, but they were all hit right to Owls as the Bisons fell 6-4 in the ASUN Semifinal round to Kennesaw State.
HERD NOTES
- Ketchup was the only Bison with multi-hits on the afternoon while Lipscomb's eight hits were scattered among seven players.
- Buxton threw 2.2 innings, allowing a run and striking out four. Matthew Bohnert suffered the loss allowing one run in 1.2 innings of work.
