Ahmed Amaar Named Bilello Award Winner in ASUN Postseason Awards

ATLANTA, Ga. – Lipscomb Track & Field's Ahmed Amaar represented the Bisons in the ASUN Postseason Awards as announced by the league office on Friday morning. Amaar received the Tom Bilello Student-Athlete Leadership award, given to a student-athlete who has performed outstanding service to their university, their university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and to the ASUN SAAC.

"It has been an absolute honor to represent the ASUN," said Amaar. "The ASUN is one of the most progressive conferences in terms of fighting for the rights of student athletes and actually amplifying them and giving them a voice."

The award is named for Tom Bilello, the former Associate AD at Troy State who passed away in 1998. According to the ASUN, the honor is given as appropriate to the ASUN delegate to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The award, voted on by various groups including faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and conference staff, was announced during the ASUN's YouTube awards ceremony.

"It's been an honor to be surrounded by great leaders around the ASUN and within Lipscomb University who have supported me," Amaar continued. "You can't do anything without your support system. Without the support of the ASUN, a lot of our achievements wouldn't have been possible."

The Burnaby, Canada product first joined Lipscomb's SAAC chapter in 2016 during his freshman season. After representing Lipscomb in the ASUN SAAC throughout his career, he received the opportunity to serve as the ASUN Division I Representative to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Following the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, Amaar was awarded the ASUN Stellar Service Award for his instrumental role as ASUN SAAC President in spearheading a change in the qualifying limitations for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Regionals that season. His initiative fought to broaden the field of competitors from 32 to 48 and also brought about ASUN policy changes that put the ASUN SAAC on a level with the ASUN Management Committee.

"First of all, I would like to thank Dr. Lin Garner. She was almost like my mom at Lipscomb, she treated me so well and guided me through SAAC. She helped develop me as a leader and she still checks in with me all the time," said Amaar. "Next is Philip Hutcheson, our Athletic Director. He is absolutely amazing. He has always been supportive of SAAC initiatives at the conference level and the institutional level."

"I would also like to thank Grace Ann Miller, our current Senior Woman Administrator who is absolutely amazing as well," Amaar continued. "I am thankful for my coaches – I had to miss a few weekends for SAAC retreats and they were always understanding because they understand the voice that we have."

A seven-time All-ASUN team member, six-time ASUN All-Academic team member, and an ASUN Indoor Athlete of the Week during the shortened 2020 season, Amaar collected a 3.84 GPA this season as a graduate student working towards his Certificate in Global Leadership.

He competed in 134 races for the Bisons in his five years on the squad and has amassed an impeccable career both on the track and off for Lipscomb in his time in the Purple and Gold. Amaar is part of the program record holding men's outdoor 4x100m relay team (40.43 at 2018 ASUN Championship), he holds the men's outdoor 100m by a senior record (10.43 at 2022 Outdoor Music City Challenge), and he holds the men's indoor 60m by a junior record (6.90 at 2020 Bulldog Invite).
In addition, Amaar posted program all-time top-5 times for the men's outdoor 100m dash, 200m dash, and 4x100m relay as well as program all-time top-5 times for the men's indoor 60m dash and 200m dash.

"I would like to give a special shoutout to (ASUN Commissioner) Ted Gumbart. He is an inspiration, seeing how much he cares and fights for student athletes and you can tell it every day just by how he talks," commented Amaar. "I also want to thank Patrick and Porsha at the ASUN and of course (Associate Commissioner of Digital Strategies) Kendrell (Watkins). He has stepped up huge the past two years for ASUN SAAC and he has been an amazing person to work with."

"I need to shout out (ASUN SAAC Chair) Courtney VanLiew and (ASUN SAAC Vice Chair) Ashley Cozad. They have become my best friends in and outside of SAAC," Amaar finished. "It goes to show that I may have been the one fighting for change at the top, but if it wasn't for everyone else giving me guidance and supporting me, then none of it would have been possible. I want to take the light off of myself and shine it on the people that really helped us get to where we are."
