Women’s Tennis Completes Historic Run at ITA Regional Championships

Box Score KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's tennis traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. this weekend to compete in the Ohio Valley Region section of the 2023 ITA Regional Championships. The Bisons went undefeated in singles on the first day of competition and one of the Bisons made it through to the final 16 players in competition for the first time in program history.

The Bisons opened play on Thursday with four singles matches and a doubles match in Knoxville. Rut Galindo and Deborah Dominguez Collado competed as Lipscomb's doubles pairing against competitors from Vanderbilt on Thursday. The Bisons fell 8-4 in doubles to the Commodores, but things looked much brighter for the Purple and Gold in singles play.

For the first time in program history, the Bisons went undefeated on the opening day of singles play. Sofiia Paladi went 6-0, 6-1 over her Indiana-Purdue opponent and Sasha Dobranos went 7-5, 6-3 over her for from Memphis. Rut Galindo claimed a three-set victory over her opponent from Xavier (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) and Deborah Dominguez Collado bested her own for from Chattanooga 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, sending all four Bisons into the round of 64 on Friday.

Dominguez Collado and Paladi both fell to opponents from Purdue on the second day of competition. Dominguez Collado fell 6-1, 6-2 and Paladi fell 6-4, 6-3. Upperclassmen Dobranos and Galindo earned straight set wins at 6-3, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-0 over opponents from Indiana-Purdue and Kentucky respectively.

Galindo fell 6-4, 6-1 to her second opponent of the day, a familiar foe from Vanderbilt. Dobranos delivered a second singles win on Friday over her opponent from Xavier (6-4, 6-3), sending her to the round of 16 and making her the first Bison in program history to advance so far in the ITA Regional Championship tournament.

Dobranos took to the court on Saturday morning against the number four seed in the tournament, Alana Wolfberg from Tennessee. Despite a strong fight, Dobranos fell 6-4, 6-2 and the Bisons' run at the 2023 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship tournament came to an end, concluding the squad's 2023 fall action.
