THE SHORT STORY
Down 20 points with 11 minutes to go in the game, Lipscomb made a furious comeback over the final minutes, ultimately falling to Arkansas 66-69 on the road in front of a sold out crowd at Simmons Bank Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a several minute delay due to light malfunction in the arena, the game finally started and the Bisons got on the board first.
Owen McCormack had a good start to the game with back-to-back triples as the Bisons got out to an early 6-5 lead.
Arkansas charged back with a 7-0 run to take the lead, but
AJ McGinnis stopped the run when he muscled his way to the basket.
Coming out of the first media timeout, Arkansas made a free throw for a 10-8 advantage, but
Will Pruitt converted on the other end with a driving layup, keeping Lipscomb level.
Arkansas started to heat up from behind the arc with triples on three-straight possessions, but the Bisons kept themselves in the game by sticking to its game plan and continuing to convert on its offensive end.
The Razorback utilized an extended 13-7 run as the Bisons started to struggle offensively, opening a 10-point lead with 4:58 left in the first half.
Arkansas got out to a 37-25 lead, but
Grant Asman knocked down a massive three-pointer at the top of the arc, getting the Bisons back in a single-digit deficit and sparking the Bisons' offense.
After forcing a turnover defensively, the Bisons punched back again on the offensive end when
Joe Anderson splashed a deep three, getting Lipscomb back within a pair of possessions, 37-31.
Lipscomb's 8-0 run continued on its next possession when
Cody Head converted on a layup, further cutting into the Arkansas lead, 37-33.
Arkansas scored four-unanswered heading into the halftime break as Lipscomb trailed 41-33 after the first 20 minutes of action.
The Razorbacks were hot out of the second half gate with scores on its first three trips down the floor, but Lipscomb hung in with baskets by Pruitt and McGinnis.
At the first media timeout of the second half, Arkansas held a 52-39 advantage.
Lipscomb's offense struggled to get going in the second half and the Razorbacks took advantage. With a 9-0 run before the second media timeout, Arkansas extended its lead 59-39 with 11:42 left in the matchup.
Arkansas held a 20-point lead for the next few minutes, but Lipscomb heated up and cut the Arkansas lead 63-62, highlighted by a pair of buckets from McGinnis.
Lipscomb's 14-2 run continued when
Jason Montgomery came into the game and made an immediate impact. He blocked an Arkansas three-point attempt and raced down to convert a triple of his own, putting Lipscomb back within single digits, 63-54 with 7:27 left to play.
The Lipscomb run continued with buckets from McCormack and Anderson as the Bisons charged to within five, 63-58 with 5:35 to play.
Lipscomb continued the 17-0 surge when Anderson drove to the bucket, putting the Bisons within three. On the next possession, McCormack converted a pair from the charity stripe to get the Bisons within a point, 63-62 with just over four minutes to play.
With 1:18 to play,
Joe Anderson drove the basket and drew a goaltending call for a one-point deficit. In the final minute of play, the Bisons had a chance to take the lead with 39 seconds left, but the shot popped out of the basket and the Razorbacks hit a driving layup on the other end.
Lipscomb had the ball with seven seconds left and had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the three-point attempt hit off the rim as Lipscomb fell 69-66 after its comeback fell just short.
HERD NOTES
- The Bisons shot 39-percent from the field and 23-percent from behind the arc.
- Four Bisons were in double figures: McGinnis (10), Pruitt (15), McCormack (13) and Anderson (11).
- McCormack finished with his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
- Lipscomb was out-rebounded by just one, 34-35.
- The Bisons committed nine turnovers, but forced 14 Arkansas turnovers.
