HOW IT HAPPENED
Baseball was unable to complete the series sweep over Austin Peay, falling in extra innings for the first time this season.
Lipscomb took a first-inning lead for the third-straight day on a two-run homer from Austin Kelly to right field. Kelly's 18th bomb broke Lipscomb's single-season home run record, previously held by Caleb Joseph and Kelly's current teammate Trace Willhoite.
Austin Peay put up their first run of the day in the fourth on a solo home run in the fourth. Lipscomb responded in the top half of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Mason Lundgrin to give the Bisons a 4-1 lead.
The Governors notched their second solo shot of the day to cut their deficit to two in the fifth. They then evened the score with a two spot in the bottom of the seventh. A throwing error and a single through the left side allowed the two runs to touch home plate.
Austin Peay eventually took the lead on a single to center field with a runner on second for a 5-4 advantage in the bottom of the eighth.
In their last attempts in regulation, looking for the sweep, Lundgrin singled to center field, and Trace Willhoite single to the pitcher to open the frame. Kelly then reached on a fielder's choice to second, advancing Lundgrin to third.
Jake Berg recorded a sac bunt RBI to tie the contest at five runs each. After the Governors intentionally walked Parks Bouck, then hit Will Lee to load the bases, the Bisons fouled out to first, which stopped the threat.
Hayden Frank sat the Governors down with two strikeouts and a fly out in the bottom half to force extra innings, but the Governors outlasted the Bisons in extras, scoring on a double to left center in the 11th frame.
HERD NOTES:
- The Bisons finished with 12 home runs in the series, a program record.
- Lipscomb scored the most run (39) and hits (38) in a series this season over the weekend.
- Willhoite finished the day 3-for-4 and 8-for-13 in three games against the Governors.
- Lipscomb left 14 runners on base in game three.
- Coach Forehand's bunch still holds the first-place spot in the ASUN with one series left at home.
