Bisons Split Afternoon Double Header with Brown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, TN – After sweeping the Robert Norris Colonials yesterday, the Bisons took to Draper Diamond again to face the Brown Bears. Lipscomb came out slow, taking a 3-0 loss to the Bears, but ended up winning the second game 7-5 in a back-and-forth matchup.

Macey Ogle started in the circle for the Bisons and wasted no time, striking two batters out in the top of the first. Despite an error that sent Elle Smith to second base in the bottom of the first, both teams entered the second scoreless.
 
The second inning resulted in the same scoring drought on both ends with neither team so much as recording a hit. While the Bears reached two runners on base on a hit by pitch and a walk, the Bisons went three up three down.
 
With two outs and no hits in the top of the third, Brown recorded the day's first run on a home run single just outside the wall at right field. The Bears ended the inning with two hits and one run, leaving a runner on base. Leaving a walked runner on base in the bottom of the third, Lipscomb remained scoreless with no hits entering the top of the fourth.
 
Halle Klaiber started in the circle to open the fourth inning and the Bears scored another earned run. Klaiber was relieved by Laine Barefoot after facing four batters. Coming off 9.2 innings pitched yesterday, Barefoot forced a line out to first and a strikeout to move into the bottom of the inning, but the Bisons went three up three down again.
 
Both Brown and Lipscomb recorded one hit and left one on base in the fifth inning with neither squad finding enough momentum for a score.
 
Lipscomb found a chance to score in the bottom of the second with two runners on base on a hit and an error. With two outs, Smith attempted to advance to third but was tagged out before she could get there.
 
Brown recorded another run for a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh, leaving Lipscomb in a tough spot. The Bears recorded two early outs before walking Macey Ogle, but the next at-bat ended the game.
 
Grace Cassarello finished the game hitting 1-2 and earning a walk. Laine Barefoot pitched 3.2 innings, facing 14 batters and dishing 4 strikeouts.
 
BROWN 5, LIPSCOMB 7
Laine Barefoot started in the circle for the Bisons and came out hot, forcing the Bears to go three up three down in the top of the first. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Brenna Sherman nearly recorded her fifth home run of the year, allowing her a triple before the play ended. Josey Polk singled to left field for Sherman to score Lipscomb's first run of the afternoon. J.Polk successfully stole second the inning ended shortly after with a 1-0 Bisons lead.
 
Both teams went three up three down in the second inning, but the Bears hit the gas in the top of the third. Brown loaded the bases with one out on one hit and after the Bisons forced an out, the Bears recorded a single to right field to send two runners home and take the lead. Lipscomb caught a fly ball shortly after to head into the bottom of the third in a 2-1 deficit but ended up going three up three down.
 
Lipscomb regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they scored on two consecutive plays. Sherman doubled to right center and J.Polk advanced her to third on a single before stealing second. Up to bat, Mallory Ogle sac bunted to send Sherman home and advanced J.Polk to third to tie the game. With one out, Ella Polk sent her sister J.Polk home on a sac fly to Brown's right fielder and Lipscomb ended the inning up 3-2.
 
Brown commanded the lead in the top of the fifth on back-to-back plays, recording a single and two doubles in the inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Sherman singled to the centerfield for 2 RBI on runs from Macyn Kirby and Hastings for a 5-4 Lipscomb lead. Sherman stole second and scored on a single from J.Polk for the Bisons' third run of the inning.
 
Brown scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to cut the Bisons' lead back to one, but the Bisons were not done yet. Mac.Ogle and Kirby were walked for Hastings' at-bat with one out. Hastings reached base on an error for Kirby to advance to second and Mac.Ogle to score an unearned run for a 7-5 lead.
 
Lipscomb closed out the top of the seventh inning to secure the win and split the weekend with the Bears.
 
Brenna Sherman highlighted game two for Lipscomb, hitting 3-4 with a double, a triple, 2 RBI, and 3 runs. Josey Polk hit 3-3 with 2 RBI and a run.
 
Laine Barefoot pitched a full game, facing 30 batters. Barefoot pitched a total of 20.1 innings on the weekend.

Lipscomb will return to Draper Diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 11th at 3:00 PM for a mid-week matchup against Bucknell in a Bisons vs. Bison showdown.
