Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, MS – Lipscomb Softball wrapped up play Saturday at the Southern Miss Tournament with a split, falling in a tight battle with Southern Miss before rallying late to defeat Southeast Missouri State.
GAME 1: LIPSCOMB 4, SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI, 5
The opening game of the day began as a pitchers' duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first four innings. Southern Mississippi broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to take an early advantage.
Lipscomb answered in the top of the fifth with a big offensive response. Briley Burns grounded out to second base to bring home Brenna Sherman for the Bisons' first run. Moments later, Macyn Kirby delivered a clutch two-RBI single to center field, scoring Kyla Jobe and Jacy Heuberger to tie the game at 3–3. Chapel Cunningham then crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher, giving Lipscomb its first lead of the contest.
Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own to regain the lead. The Bisons threatened late but were unable to push across the tying run, as Southern Miss held on for the one-run victory.
Kirby led the Lipscomb offense with two RBI, while Burns added a key run-producing out during the fifth-inning rally.
GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 7, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE, 4
SEMO jumped out to an early four-run lead in the first inning, but the Bisons chipped away and stayed within striking distance as the game progressed.
Lipscomb broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when Paige Rader singled to center field to drive in Brenna Sherman. The Bisons followed with another RBI single from Mallory Ogle, scoring Rader to make it a two-run game. Elle Smith then reached on a bunt fielder's choice, allowing Jacy Heuberger to score on the throw and cut the deficit to one.
In the top of the seventh, Lipscomb completed the comeback. Kyla Jobe delivered an RBI single to even the score at 4–4, setting the stage for a decisive swing. Briley Burns followed with a bases-loaded single to right field, driving in two runs, while an error allowed two more to score as the Bisons erupted for four runs in the frame to take a 7–4 lead.
The Lipscomb pitching staff closed the door in the bottom of the seventh to secure the comeback victory.
Burns paced the offense with two RBI in the decisive seventh inning, while Jobe, Ogle, and Rader each delivered key run-scoring hits during the rally.
