Volleyball Mauls Cougars in Straight Sets

NASHVILLE – A clean sweep on opening weekend. The Lipscomb University Volleyball team (2-0) finished off an undefeated weekend with a straight-set sweep (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) of the College of Charleston (0-2), Saturday night inside Allen Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons opened the first set with a decisive performance against the Cougars, securing a 25-19 victory. Between 10 ties and four lead changes, CoC tied it up at 15 after a service error. On the next rally, one of Sydney Strenger's six kills earned the Bisons the sideout, as they finished on a 10-4 run to take the first.
In set two, LUV sprinted out to a 9-3 lead, but CoC responded with a 10-6 run to trim the visitors' deficit to 15-13 at the technical timeout. After an error on the serve to give the ball back to the Cougars, the Bisons were quick to get the ball back. A block by Lexi Guinn and Sydney Strenger, plus kills by Ella Durham, made it 24-19 en route to a 25-21 victory.
Even though there were only two ties in set three and it went to lingering death, Lipscomb never relinquished the lead. However, Charleston, down 24-22, scored the next three to force extra points after back-to-back kills by Central Arkansas transfer Gabby Tuiaana. However, Durham's 15th kill of the night and a Kelsey Schenck and Brooklyn Fuchs block completed the sweep for the Bisons.
HERD NOTES
For LUV, it's the program's first 2-0 start since the 2020-21 season, when the Bisons played their matches in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a "traditional" fall setting, it's the first time since 2018 that the program has started 2-0.
This was the first-ever matchup between Charleston and Lipscomb in volleyball.
With Saturday's straight-sweep, the Bisons picked up their 225th career victory (since 2002) when a match goes to three frames, improving to 225-154.
KEY STATISTICS
Ella Durham led the attack with a match-high 15 kills, equalizing her efforts from Friday night. Adding 11 digs, she earned her sixth career double-double.
Sydney Strenger put together 14.5 points with 11 kills and five assisted blocks, a new career best for the sophomore.
Kelsey Scheck put together back-to-back double-doubles with 37 assists and 10 digs.
Makenna Kirlin contributed 11 digs and Grace Jones was a perfect 19-for-19 on receptions and dug out 10 attacks.

The Bisons will tangle with the No. 15 Jayhawks of the University of Kansas to open the LUV Invitational. First serve is set for Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Allen Arena.
