It was the first win for LUV against a Power 4 Team since 2023
NASHVILLE – On Friday afternoon, it was Florida State University that picked up the upset in the LUV Invitational with a five-set victory over the No. 16 University of Kansas. On Saturday night, the Bisons returned the favor, as Lipscomb University (3-1) overcame a struggle in the second set to defeat the Seminoles (3-2) in four sets (25-23, 13-25, 25-18, 25-23) inside Allen Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a five-set match by the Seminoles on Friday, the Bisons used that to their advantage. Using Ella Durham's ace and an Anna Claire Brown kill to go up 7-3 after Kenzie Kucks had served an ace in the opening points.
Sydney Strenger helped keep the margin in the Bisons' favor with three kills during a stretch that took the set to 13-6, and Durham's kill later made it 16-9.
The Seminoles worked back with a three-point burst to 17-13 and later used kills by Bailey Higgins and Kyleene Filimaua to get within 20-18, but the Bisons answered with kills from Kelsey Schenck, Durham, and Brooklyn Fuchs to reach 23-20.
FSU tied the set at 23-23 on three straight points before a service error gave the Bisons set point, and Brown finished the 25-23 set with a kill from Schenck.
Florida State joined the match in the second set, storming out to leads of 7-2 and 15-5.
The Bisons continued to side out through Brown, Strenger, and Lexi Guinn, including back-to-back points that made it 21-11. FSU reached set point at 24-12 on a Bisons attack error, and after a service error gave the Bisons one more point, Lexie Mason closed the set for the Seminoles, 25-13.
In the third, the Bisons scored the first two points on a Seminoles attack error and a Strenger kill, but FSU moved in front 7-6 with Delaney Ewing and Lexie Mason kills helping the early exchange.
After a Callie Kieffer bad set tied the set, the Bisons turned the 7-6 deficit into an 11-8 lead during a stretch that included a Brown-Strenger block and a Strenger kill, before the Seminoles answered with kills by Sofia Moss and Bailey Higgins to make it 11-11.
The set stayed level through 14-14, then Brown put down two kills around a Fuchs-Brown block as the Bisons moved ahead 18-14, though FSU pulled within 19-17 before Brown's kill made it 20-17.
Brown then served the Bisons to four straight points, including an ace, for a 24-17 advantage, and after a service error, Strenger finished the set with a kill for a 25-18 win.
The Seminoles answered the Bisons' opening point with five straight, using a Victoria David ace and kills from Delaney Ewing and Bailey Higgins to move ahead 5-1.
The visitors later stretched the lead to 14-8 and still led 21-17 before Guinn's kill and three consecutive Brown service aces pulled the Bisons even at 21-21.
After David put FSU back in front 22-21, Strenger delivered back-to-back kills, one on an overturn of a Florida State challenge) and teamed with Durham on a block to give the Bisons set point at 24-22.
Ewing's kill brought the Seminoles within 24-23, but Durham answered with a kill from Schenck to close the Bisons' 25-23 set win.

Lipscomb's streak of 430 straight matches with a block was in jeopardy until the third set. The Bisons totaled five in the third set and posted seven blocks in the final two frames to the Seminoles' four.
The Bisons picked up their first-ever win over Florida State in the first-ever matchup, as they improved to 6-17 against teams from the ACC.
Lipscomb's last win over a Power 4 school came in a five setter on Sept. 9, 2023, defeating Kansas State at home.

Anna Claire Brown had new career highs in the win on Saturday night with 20.5 points on 14 kills, five aces and three blocks. From the front row, she posted three errors on 28 swings for a .393 percentage.
Sydney Strenger picked up a season-high 14 kills on a .357 attack percentage and four total blocks.
Ella Durham added 11 kills and nine digs, while Kelsey Schenck assisted on 44 of LUV's 54 kills and also totaled 12 digs.
Grace Jones picked up 13 digs and went a perfect 22-for-22 on serve receptions.
