Softball shuts out Samford 5-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lipscomb softball team continued their winning ways for the weekend, defeating host Samford 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham.

The Lady Bisons (8-2) swept both matches with the host Bulldogs at the Samford Invitational.

Junior Jordan Fortel pitched a shutout for Lipscomb, allowing only four hits and dealing three strikeouts for her second win of the season.

Lipscomb struck first with three runs in the third. Freshman Caitlin Turner walked, and senior Abby Fenichel blasted a double off the wall to score Turner for Lipscomb’s first run.

Sophomore Hannah Devault singled to left and advanced to second on the throw, while Fenichel moved to third.

Devault and Fenichel then both scored on a fielding error during senior Caitlin Plocheck’s at bat.

In the fourth, sophomore Peyton Ward reached base on a hitch-by-pitch, advanced to second on a ground out, and made it to third on a single from Turner.

Turner and Ward then performed a double steal, with Ward swiping home plate to give Lipscomb a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Bisons grabbed an insurance run in the sixth. Brewer singled, and then Turner reached base on a fielder’s choice, with Brewer making it to third on the throw.

Fenichel singled to left scoring Brewer to put Lipscomb ahead 5-0.

Sophomore Chloe Yeager entered in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

Lipscomb will be back today at 1:30 p.m. with a second game against Indiana.
