Meet The Herd: Baseball Newcomers

NASHVILLE - With Opening Day nearing, Lipscomb baseball would like to feature the new faces of the team this season. Get to know The Herd by checking out the details on some student-athletes below.

Knox Preston #9 l Freshman l 3B/C l Nashville, Tenn. (Christ Presbyterian Academy)

Why did you decide to come to Lipscomb?

My recruiting was kind of crazy and I was looking for a good man and a good coach, which I found here with Coach Forehand.

What is one thing you're looking forward to in your first season at Lipscomb?

I've heard a lot of good things about road trips and traveling, so just the experience of being a college athlete because we've all dreamt about it and now it's crazy that it's actually here.

What was your favorite video game growing up?

Modern Warfare 2. For kids my age, that was like the game that was huge for us. It was just awesome.

Do you have any nicknames that your teammates call you or that you grew up with?

They all call me Doug because they said I look old.

Who is your favorite MLB players batting stance?

I really like Mookie Betts. He's probably my favorite player.

Malik Williams #44 l Junior l INF l Toronto, Canada (Johnson County CC)

Why did you decide to come to Lipscomb?

I fell in love with the city. I really love Nashville.

What is one thing you're looking forward to in your first season at Lipscomb?

I'm just ready to play on Opening Day.

How do you think the jump going from Junior College to Division I will be for you?

I think it's going to be okay. I mean the pitching is fairly similar, just a little bit better here but I think I will fit in well.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Probably the Toronto Raptors winning it all because the city went crazy and it was just nuts over there.

How did you get into baseball?

My mom actually. She used to play when she was younger and she made me and my brother play. She also coached us all the through from when we were like 4-years old to 12 or something like that.

Matt Gorman #25 l Sophomore l RHP l Philadelphia, Pa. (Harford CC)

Why did you decide to come to Lipscomb?

Lipscomb was a school I was solely intrested in based on loaction. I heard a lot of great things about the coaching staff and obviously a lot of good things about the school, so I was immediately attracted to it. Everything about it was a home-type feeling and as soon as I got here I knew this was the place for me and I couldn't be happier.

What is one thing you're looking forward to in your first season at Lipscomb?

I think this is going to be a great year. Not trying to sound cliche, but we've got a bunch of guys that are highly motivated. Everyone wants to see each other succeed. One thing I saw a lot in JUCO was always competitivness amongst each other, but here it's competitivness as a team against the other team, which is outstanding. I think that the leadership we're given from Skip and the seniors this year I think we're going to go out there with a fire underneath of us and compete as best as we can.

We saw your in the music game and have a song on Spotify, how did that come to be?

I started writing songs my junior year in high school because I was in a English class that focused on poetry. I kind of liked writing so I figured why not try to turn a poem into a song. I can play the guitar, but I didn't know I could sing and I don't think I can sing that well, but I try. So I turned a poem into a song, played some guitar with it, recorded it on Garage Band, sent it to a few of my closest friends and they liked it a lot. They sent it to their friends and I found out that it was played at a bonfire a couple of states away and that was pretty cool, so I figured why not try and keep doing it. Once I got the opportunity to look at a school in Nashville I was obviously like I want to play country music, I want to write and sing, so this seems like it was the absolute best situation.

So then who would you say your favorite musician or band is?

I'm a big fan of Brooks and Dunn. I really like 90's country and I think nowadays country music is awesome. There's a lot of different types of styles of country music today, but Brooks and Dunn are two of my idols. Luke Combs is also an exemplary 90's country rockstar and also definitely a favortie as well.

If you could have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Steak, medium rare.
