Relive Top Moments from 2020 ASUN Baseball Season

ATLANTA, Ga. - Highlighting the 2020 ASUN Conference Baseball season, the league office announced its top moments from the 2019-20 academic year among the ASUN's nine programs. The top moments cover accomplishments on and off the field and in the community.

This season saw a total of eight walk-off wins by ASUN squads as FGCU and Stetson led the way with two each. Liberty and North Alabama also both tossed combined no-hitters against Marist and Belmont, respectively, while FGCU Head Coach Dave Tollett collected his 600th career victory. The season was bookended by community service efforts and a pair of academic accolades for Lipscomb's Maddux Houghton and Stetson's Andrew MacNeil.


Top Moments from the 2020 ASUN Baseball Season

- Liberty teamed with the softball squad to host the Spooktacular Kids Carnival in October. The annual carnival featured a wide variety of games, activities and treats, along with a chance for Liberty's student-athletes to interact with community children and their families.

- Stetson baseball held its annual Thanksgiving blood drive with every member donating. The team also participated in the downtown DeLand "Monsters on Main Street" event for Halloween with "Monsters at Melching". Also, for the second straight year, the Hatters hosted a "Special Ride" to the park on opening weekend for children with special needs to form a gala entry feel for the kids as they came into the park after riding in a variety of hot rods and sports cars.

- A trio of ASUN Baseball players was named to the NCAA's Top 150 hitters in college baseball, according to D1Baseball analytics, prior to the start of the 2020 season -- Kennesaw State's Justin Russell (38), NJIT's Julio Marcano (97) and FGCU's Joe Kinker (145).

- The Ospreys earned a 5-4 walk-off win on opening day of the 2020 season (Feb. 14) off a balk by VMI. North Florida added a win over defending Big Ten Tournament champion Ohio State by a 9-5 score as the Ospreys pounded out 13 hits in the March 11 victory.

- Stetson's Robbie Peto tossed 7.0 innings allowing just one hit with a career-high 12 strikeouts in 4-1 win over Air Force (Feb. 15). Chris Gonzalez also added a career-high punchouts (13) in a 5-0 complete-game win at Bethune-Cookman on March 4.

- NJIT defeated a Big Ten Conference opponent for the third consecutive season in its 4-2 win over Penn State on Feb. 15. The win was the first of the season for the Highlanders and secured the doubleheader split with the Nittany Lions.

- On Feb. 15, Chrisitan Coipel belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as Jacksonville came from behind to defeat No. 35 West Virginia. Coipel also propelled the Dolphins to a 2-1 win over VCU with a walk-off single in the ninth inning on March 8.

- The Hatters downed UCF on the road for the first time in 13 years behind a pair of homers from Eric Foggo. Stetson scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead and held off a late Knights run for the win as Garner Spoljaric earned his first save of the year.

- FGCU Head Coach Dave Tollett earned his 600th career win in the 2-0 shutout vs. Kent State on Feb. 21. A five-time ASUN Coach of the Year, his .624 career winning percentage (608-365-3) ranks 30th among active NCAA Division I coaches.

- Jorge Arenas delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as Stetson downed Hartford 3-2. The Hatters earned another walk-off win on Feb. 29 in an 8-7 (12 inn.) victory over UMBC on a two-out single by Foggo scoring Kyle Ball.

- FGCU got a walk-off win over Eastern Michigan (3-2) on Feb. 25 as Cameron Krzeminski walked to score Marc Coffers. The Eagles added another walk-off victory in its last game of the season as Kyle Machado doubled in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 6-5 win over Georgetown (March 10).

- Five North Alabama pitchers (Cosi Scinta, Colton Teal, Jacob James, Bryant Claunch, Kyle Moore) made history at Mike Lane Field on Feb. 25 as they threw the first combined no-hitter in school history in a 1-0 win over Belmont. The win was the sixth recorded no-hitter in school history and the first since 2010.

- On Leap Day (Feb. 29), the Eagles outlasted Bethune-Cookman 5-3 in 16 innings. The marathon contest was the longest game in FGCU history.

- The Liberty trio of Noah Skirrow, Troy Britts and Landon Riley threw a combined no-hitter in the 6-4 win over Marist on Feb. 29. It was the program's first no-hitter in nearly 20 years (April 2000).

- Lipscomb won a three-game series against defending Big Ten Tournament champion Ohio State from Feb. 28-March 1, including a walk-off 5-4 win on Feb. 29. The Bisons also secure game three of the series by a 4-2 score.

- The Hatters' pitching staff tossed 27 consecutive scoreless innings from Feb. 29-March 6. After allowing one run in a win over Ohio State the Stetson staff followed with 18 more scoreless innings.

- March 1 provided a pair of walk-off ASUN winners as Kennesaw State got three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 win over Penn behind a Darius Diaz single and Alex Carballo double. Liberty pulled out the series sweep over Marist by a 4-3 score as Ben Highfill belted a walk-off home run to lead-off the bottom of the ninth for the Flames.

- Also on March 1, a pair of program records were set as Liberty's Garret Price set a new career record with his 80th all-time appearance in the win over the Red Fox. In addition, NJIT set a new single-game program mark with 23 runs scored in the series-clinching win over Bucknell (23-14) as all 10 Highlander players in the lineup scored at least one run.

- Lipscomb ended No. 23 Alabama's 14-game winning streak to open the 2020 season with a 3-2 win in Tuscaloosa on March 7. It was the first time the Bisons beat a ranked foe since March 27, 2018, when they took down No. 8 Vanderbilt, 5-1.

- In the 6-5 win over No. 24 Pepperdine on March 3, FGCU notched the program's 22nd win over a nationally-ranked opponent.

- FGCU catcher Alex Brait was named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List. He was the lone player from the ASUN named and the first Eagle in program history to be listed.

- Lipscomb's Maddux Houghton and Stetson's Andrew MacNeil were named CoSIDA Academic All-District® First Team selections. Both players advance to the national ballot in hopes of receiving Academic All-America® distinction.
