Pitching shines to open season in doubleheader sweep

HOOVER, Ala. – The Lipscomb baseball team had to wait a little longer than expected to open up its 2021 campaign, but the Bisons made sure it was well worth it by taking both ends of a double header Monday against Murray State inside the Hoover Met.

In the first season-opening games away from Dugan Field since 2009, the purple and gold pitched 16 shutout innings and came away with 4-2 and 8-2 victories over the Racers (0-2).

GAME 1 – Lipscomb 4, Murray State 2
Ike Buxton (1-0) made his first career start in the opener after transferring from Boise State in the offseason. The redshirt freshman gave up three hits in five scoreless innings, striking out five.

After retiring in order the first two innings, Lipscomb broke through in the bottom of the third when sophomore shortstop Robbie Merced tripled off the wall in center on a 2-0 count for his first career hit as a Bison. Three pitches later, Chaz Bertolani brought Merced home with a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 score.

The Bisons tacked on another in the bottom of the fourth on a Maddux Houghton single to center. Chris Bashlor crossed the dish after walking earlier in the frame.

Bertolani struck again for Lipscomb in the seventh with a RBI double down the left field line, bringing around Houghton, who reached on a fielder's choice before swiping second.

Lipscomb's final insurance tally came in the eighth frame after Haddon Adams led off with a triple to the wall in right. He then came home seconds later on a Murray State wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Murray State's Brock Anderson put the Racers on the board in the top of the ninth with a 2-run blast over the right field fence. Sophomore Tyler Guilfoil immediately got the call from the Bisons pen to come in and shut the door. After leading the nation last season with six saves, he struck out two batters and earned his first of 2021.

GAME 2 – Lipscomb 8, Murray State 2
Making just the third start of his career, 6-foot-4 southpaw Logan Van Treeck (1-0) stole the show in the nightcap. He tossed 6.0 shutout innings, allowed just a single hit and struck out a career high 11 batters. The Lincoln, Nebraska native fanned two Racers in each of the first three stanzas before striking out the side in the sixth to end his night.

The Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bashlor brought home Adams on a groundball to short.

Lipscomb's biggest inning of the day came in the fifth when the Bisons turned three hits and two Murray State miscues into four runs and a 5-0 advantage. Carter Smith recorded a RBI single to left and Houghton followed with a 2-RBI single to right in the next at-bat. Two batters later, Houghton crossed the dish on a groundball from Ty Smith.

Brian Moore made it 6-0 in the sixth with a RBI base knock of his own to center field, driving in Jones who singled and stole second to get into scoring position.

Sophomore hurler Scott Elgin entered in relief in the top of the seventh and after fanning the first two batters on six straight strikes, the Racers worked the bases loaded. Elgin shut the door on MSU's best scoring chance of the night with a fly ball to right.

Murray State was finally able to break through in the eighth when Anderson, once again, lifted a 2-run homer to right, making it a 6-2 Bison lead.

Lipscomb added its final two runs in the bottom of the frame when Adams drove in Jones on a single to right center field and Tiger Borom grounded to second base, allowing Brian Moore to scoot home.

Elgin finished up the ninth to earn the save after working the final 3.0 innings.
