ATHENS – Costly third and eighth innings gave No. 7 Georgia the 7-0 edge over Lipscomb Baseball Saturday afternoon at Foley Field.
The Bisons had opportunities but left six on base against the Bulldogs who out-hit Lipscomb 8-3.
Things looked good for Lipscomb at the start of the game when starting pitcher Max Habegger retired the Bulldogs in order. The Bisons continued to look good defensively, ending the second inning by turning a double play to keep things scoreless.
Georgia opened things up in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-0 lead after a three-run home run.
Both squads showcased impressive defense through the next several innings. Tyler Drabick replaced Habbeger on the bump in the bottom of the seventh and immediately went to work, sending the first man he faced back to the dugout.
Malik Williams finally broke through for the Bisons and knocked the squad's first base-hit of the day in the top of the seventh.
After coming in the game as a defensive substitute the inning before, Tiger Borom made quick work offensively with a two-out double down the right field line to put two Lipscomb runners in scoring position.
With two Bisons in scoring position, Georgia dug in and got a strikeout to end the top of the seventh inning, still holding onto the 3-0 lead.
Carter Smith notched the Bisons' final hit of the game in the top of the eighth with a single through the right side.
The bottom of the eighth is when the Bulldogs ran away with the lead, scoring four more runs off a sacrifice fly and another three-run long ball to increase the lead 7-0.
The Bisons were unable to overcome the deficit in the ninth, making the final score 7-0.
