Bisons Can't Overcome Deficit Despite Late Rally

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lipscomb fell 5-4 to Liberty despite a late nine-inning rally Sunday afternoon at Worthington Field. Haddon Adams lead the way for the Bisons with two hits and a two-run home run that sparked the ninth-inning offense.

The squad notched seven hits on the afternoon while the Lipscomb pitching staff held Liberty to six hits and punched out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lipscomb took the lead in the top of the third after a leadoff double by Carter Smith gave the Bisons some momentum.

After a sacrifice bunt moved Smith 90-feet from home plate, Brian Moore delivered a sacrifice fly to give Lipscomb a 1-0 lead.

Liberty responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. The Flames settled in offensively and took a 4-1 lead after three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Lipscomb had a good chance when Tiger Borom worked a leadoff walk and stole second, but he was stranded as the Bisons were held off the board.

The Flames extended its lead 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to center field.

Things looked bleak for the Bisons heading into the final frame, but they came alive in the top of the ninth. Robbie Merced worked a leadoff walk to give Lipscomb a spark and with one swing of the bat, Haddon Adams made it a two-run ballgame with a homer down the left line.

Malik Williams and Chaz Bertolani notched back-to-back hits, putting the tying run in scoring position.

With one out, Smith delivered an RBI groundout to score Williams, making it 5-4, and pushed the tying run to third base, putting the pressure on the Flames.

With two outs, Lipscomb delivered a sharply hit ball, but a good defensive play by Liberty retired the side to secure the 5-4 victory.
