Final Score: Lipscomb: 12, Bellarmine: 4
Location: Louisville, Ky. (Knights Stadium)
Records: Lipscomb: 15-13 (4-5, ASUN), Bellarmine: 3-15 (1-8, ASUN)
THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball completed the three-game sweep of Bellarmine Sunday afternoon behind electric offense to improve to 4-5 in ASUN play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Much like the first two games of the series, Lipscomb wasted little time getting on the board. David Coppedge set the tone with a leadoff single and advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Mason Lundgrin kept things going with a hit of his own for a pair of runners with two outs. Malik Williams delivered the first RBI of the night with a single to right field for an early 1-0 Lipscomb lead.
Ike Buxton got the starting nod Sunday and got into a jam in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, but he worked out of it and kept the Knights off the board in the first.
A two-out rally in the top of the second gave the Bisons a 2-0 lead after a two-out single from Caleb Ketchup and a single through the right side for Coppedge.
Bellarmine bounced back with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second to quickly take a 3-2 lead.
The Bisons were unable to get on the board in the fourth but tied it in the top of the fifth when Maddux Houghton reached third on an error and tied things 3-3 when he scored thanks to a Williams RBI double.
Lipscomb broke things open in the top of the sixth with five runs. Trace Willhoite turned on the first pitch he saw in the inning for a leadoff home run and a 4-3 lead. Cam McMillan gave the Bisons another base runner with a single through the left side. McMillan scored after advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring during a rundown on a pickoff attempt. With a 5-3 cushion, Ketchup scored on a sacrifice fly and the final two runs of the inning came when Maddux Houghton scored on a Malik Williams RBI single and Mason Lundgrin scored during another rundown on a pickoff attempt for a 7-3 Lipscomb lead.
The Bisons' bats came alive in the top of the seventh when Willhoite once again led off with a solo shot over the left field fence. McMillan made it two in a row when he swung on the first pitch he saw and sent his second out of the park in as many days. With two outs, Chaz Bertolani kept with the theme of the inning and connected on his first long ball of the season, giving Lipscomb a 7-3 lead.
The final Lipscomb run of the afternoon came in the top of the ninth after Willhoite worked a walk and advanced to scoring position on a Ketchup single. Bertolani stayed hot and singled up the middle and Willhoite scored for a 12-3 lead.
Bellarmine broke a six-inning scoreless drought in the bottom of the ninth when it scored on a passed ball, but that was all they got as Lipscomb swept the Knights with a 12-4 Sunday victory.
