ATLANTA, Ga. – Lipscomb Baseball landed five spots on ASUN All-Conference teams, Coach of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors the league announced Tuesday. Head coach
Jeff Forehand was named ASUN Coach of the Year while
Caleb Ketchup was awarded Defensive Player of the Year honors and earned a spot on the All-Freshmen Team.
Malik Williams and
Michael Dunkelberger earned spots on the ASUN Second team while
Rudy Maxwell and
Maddux Houghton rounded out Lipscomb's awards with spots on the All-Academic squad.
Forehand was awarded ASUN Coach of the Year for the first time in his career and becomes the first coach in Lipscomb program history to earn the honor. He led the Bisons to a 34-20 record on the season in 2022, improving from an 18-win season just a year ago. The Bisons went 20-10 in conference play, earning the ASUN West Regular Season Championship, Lipscomb Baseball's first Regular Season Championship since 2008. Forehand also reached his milestone 600
th career victory this season with a 12-4 victory over Akron.
Ketchup made an immediate impact for Lipscomb as a redshirt freshman to earn Defensive Player of the Year and All-Freshmen Team nods. The Atlanta, Georgia native covered an incredible amount of ground at shortstop with 155 assists, the third-most in the ASUN and 69 putouts on the season. He fielded .933 on the season while continually making incredible plays. He was part of 22 double plays, also a top-25 mark in the ASUN. Offensively, Ketchup finished the regular season with a .290 batting average and hit an impressive .322 in ASUN play. He was the leadoff man for the Bisons for most of the season and notched 23 RBI on 56 hits. He swiped 30 bags on the season to lead the ASUN, a mark that ranks 16
th in the nation.
Williams led Lipscomb with a .363 batting average through the regular season, a top-10 mark in the ASUN and batted .375 in conference games. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada native racked up a team-high 59 RBI, a top-five conference mark, and had 17 extra-base hits for a .542 slugging percentage, the 13
th-best clip in the conference. Williams also registered the seventh-most hits in the conference with 77 on the season. At first base, he had 452 putouts on the season with 16 assists and boasted a fielding percentage of .987 and was part of 38 double plays.
Dunkelberger cemented himself as Lipscomb's Friday night pitcher for the entirety of ASUN play, pitching in 14 games with 12 starts, throwing a team-high 74.1 innings. The South Bend, Indiana Native finished the season with an ASUN-high seven wins on the season with just two losses. The left-handed hurler finished with the fourth-best ERA of starters in the conference (3.15) and struck out 62 on the season, 54 of which came in ASUN play. Dunkelberger finished sixth in the ASUN with just over two walks per nine innings.
Houghton earned a spot on the All-Academic team for the second time in his career while boasting a 4.0 GPA, studying for a Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership. The outfielder graduated last year with a 4.0 and a degree in Sports Management with a minor in General Business. Houghton finished the regular season hitting at a .290 clip, playing in all but one game on the season. The Dalton, Ga. Native hit over .300 in ASUN play and reached base at a .411 clip on the season. He stole 20 bases, the fourth-ranked mark in the ASUN and had 16 extra-base hits with nine doubles, three triples and four home runs to go along with his 26 RBI.
Maxwell was a newcomer to the 2022 Lipscomb Baseball roster as a graduate transfer from Duke. The outfielder boasts a 4.0 GPA while studying for a Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership. Maxwell finished the regular season with the second-best batting average on Lipscomb's squad at .332 and hit .345 in ASUN play. With the help of 10 home runs, the Nashville, Tenn. native slugged at a .589 clip and .655 in conference play which ranks eighth in the ASUN. He also finished with the fourth-most triples in the ASUN and finished top-10 in the ASUN with 16 doubles. Maxwell notched 53 RBI, ranking 11
th in the ASUN.
Lipscomb will begin its quest for the ASUN Tournament Championship Tuesday, May 24 at 2 p.m. with a game against No. 3 Kennesaw State. Pool play will continue with guaranteed games on Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26 against No. 4 FGCU and No. 1 Liberty, respectively.
