Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong pitching, complete offense leads baseball to victory on senior day

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb baseball used the long ball early to jump out in front of Bellarmine and never looked back as the Bisons went on to take the ASUN Conference series with an 8-1 victory Saturday night at Dugan Field.
The Bisons improved to 28-18 overall and 15-8 in league play with the win, remaining one game out of first place in the division.

Mason Lundgrin unleashed on a 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the first inning and sent it over the left field fence for his third home run of the season to put the Bisons on top 1-0.

After Lipscomb starter Collin Witzke retired the Knights (10-35, 7-16) in order in the second, the Bisons doubled their lead when John Shields ripped an RBI-single into left center field to bring home Rudy Maxwell.

The purple and gold continued to add to their advantage in the fourth frame. Maxwell drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Shields followed with a single down the third base line to put runners at the corners. Bellarmine tried to pick off Shields at first, but a bad throw sailed into right field, allowing Maxwell to plate from third. Two batters later, Chaz Bertolani lifted a deep fly ball to the warning track for a sac fly to push the lead to 4-0.

The Knights manufactured their only run of the night in the top of the fifth after a Bison error extended the inning, leading to a score on a ground ball to short, trimming the score to 4-1.

Lipscomb got that run back in the sixth, however, when Trace Willhoite hit a titanic solo shot to left center for his 10th homer of the season.

The Bisons added three insurance tallies in the eighth on a Maxwell RBI-double to left, a sac bunt from Shields and a RBI-single from Ethan Stamps to center.

Witzke got the win, improving to 3-2 on the season. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts.

Tyler Legere, Matthew Bohnert and Trey Nordman only allowed one hit against the pen 4.0 combined frames. They also combined for four punch outs.
