Cross Country Completes Busy Weekend Ahead of ASUN Championships

EVANSVILLE, Ind./MADISON, Wis./CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Bisons split up this weekend and headed to three different meets across the country. The first group, a selection from both the men's and the women's teams, competed at the Angel Mounds Invite on Friday morning, followed by a delegation from the women's team at the Nuttycombe Invite in Wisconsin. A group from the men's team concluded the weekend at the XC23 Pre-Nationals meet, hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
 
The three groups turned in big performances at their various meets this weekend. First up were the women's delegation in Evansville, who claimed a team first-place finish with just 22 points and five top-10 finishes out of 15 teams.

Mollie Longmire led the squad across the line as she claimed first place overall with a personal best time of 21:04.2, followed closely by Leonie Saurer in second place overall from a time of 21:06.6. Caroline Inman, Lindsay Ott, and Sydney Liddle earned three further top-10 finishes for the squad, crossing the finish line fourth, sixth, and tenth overall, respectively.
 
Grace McGuckin was the next Bison across the line with a time of 22:31.1 to finish 22nd overall. Hannah DeHaven clocked a time of 23:05.4 to round out the squad's scoring group as she finished 40th out of 166 runners.
 
The men ran next in Indiana, combining for a fourth-place finish as a team out of 19 teams competing Friday morning. Braedon Palmer led the Bisons across the line with a 24:26.6 to finish third overall out of 167 runners. AJ Goecker crossed the line next for the Purple and Gold and he earned 14th overall with a 25:22.5.
 
Bing Hudson and Trey Haralson claimed 31st and 35th place respectively from times of 26:10.3 and 26.16.9. Up next across the line were Connor Sarkovics in 52nd from a time of 26:36.0 and Michael Polizzi in 86th with a time of 27:34.7. Brian Risse rounded out the Bisons' appearance in Indiana with a time of 27:53.0 to finish 99th overall.
 
The women's squad in Wisconsin were the next Bisons to step on a cross country course Friday morning, competing in the Nuttycombe Invite, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Bisons delivered a huge showing on a rainy day in Madison and they combined for 363 points to finish tenth out of 33 teams ahead of programs such as Ole Miss, Colorado, Utah, Duke, and Florida State.
 
Mackenzie Barnett led the Bisons across the line with a 53rd place finish out of 249 runners, logging a time of 20:45.8 in the 6K. Kiara Carter and Lydia Miller crossed the finish line next with times of 20:52.1 and 20:52.7 to finish 66th and 68th respectively.
 
Next to the finish was freshman Harley Kletz with a time of 20:55.7 to finish 79th, followed by Liza Corso in 102nd place with a 21:04.4. Ellie Brewer (21:24.2) and Colbi Borland (21:37.7) rounded out the Bisons' scoring group when they crossed the line 132nd and 160th.
 
The final Bisons to compete this weekend hit the course in Charlottesville Saturday morning as the men's delegation at the XC23 Pre-Nationals meet readied for competition. The Purple and Gold put in big times in a stacked field to finish 21st ahead of Minnesota and Arizona.
 
Ben Butcher and Brady Johnson led the squad across the line as they finished 69th and 71st out of 184 runners with times of 24:19.7 and 24:20.7. Scott McKenzie earned a top-100 finish as well, coming in at 96th with a 24:31.0 in the 8K.
 
Bryan Hernandez brought in a time of 24:37.9 to finish 108th, followed by James Schmidt in 136th with a 24:57.0. Levi Streeval clocked a 25:17.7 to finish 157th and freshman Daniel Winkelman collected a time of 25:25.3 to finish 163rd overall.
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons will return to action on Saturday, October 28th as they host the 2023 ASUN Cross Country Championships at the Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course in Nashville, Tennessee. The women will run at 9:15am CT and the men will run at 10:00am CT.
