Track & Field Delivers Impressive Day One at ASUN ITF Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb track & field traveled to Gainesville, Fla. this weekend to compete in the 2024 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Conference Championships. The Bisons put on a day of incredible performances, including two individual ASUN Champion titles for the women's team.
 
"We had a strong day one at the ASUN Championships," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Nick Polk. "We put ourselves in a great position for day two and almost everyone who competed today overachieved. We are so proud of our day one individual ASUN Champions Aislinn McElhaney and Mackenzie Barnett!"
 
Aislinn McElhaney and Mackenzie Barnett tallied two historic individual ASUN Indoor Track & Field Champion titles to further embellish the Bisons' impressive first day. McElhaney claimed the Bisons first ever women's long jump ASUN Indoor Track & Field Individual Champion title with her jump of 6.39m (20' 11.75"), earning first place by more than a foot and a half and claiming a spot on the ASUN First Team All-Conference.
 
Barnett claimed the squad's second ASUN Indoor Track & Field Individual Champion title of the weekend late in the day with an incredible burst of speed in the last 100m of the 5,000m event to clinch first place by a tenth of a second. Her time of 16:51.59 earned the Bisons their first ASUN Indoor Track & Field Women's 5,000m Individual Champion title since 2020.
 
Barnett wasn't alone on the podium for the women's 5,000m event, however. Colbi Borland (16:51.69) and Mollie Longmire (17:00.63) earned second and third place respectively in the event, clinching spots on the Second and Third All-Conference Teams as well. Abigail Horevay earned a further top-5 finish in the event for the Bisons, claiming fifth place with a time of 17:10.74.
 
Gabriel Martin and Braedon Palmer brought home two more Second Team All-Conference honors for the squad. Martin logged a program record-setting jump of 7.20m (23' 7.5") in the men's long jump while Palmer posted a time of 14:17.42 in the men's 5,000m to claim two more second-place finishes for the Bisons.
 
The Purple and Gold put in the work all the way through the final event of  the day, recording a new program record and claiming Third Team All-Conference honors in the women's DMR as Leonie Saurer, Jaden Mathews, Sydney Liddle, and Lydia Miller combined for a time of 11:27.34.
 
The Bisons are in a strong position for day two of the meet 21 top-10 finishes in Friday's preliminaries, including 13 times qualifying athletes for Saturday's finals.
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons will return to the track first thing Saturday, Feb. 24th for the final day of the ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships. Lipscomb will first have an athlete competing in the women's high jump at 9:00am CT.
