Baseball Routs Lions in Series Clinching Victory Saturday

FLORENCE, Ala. - Lipscomb Baseball had a season-high 15 hits, five of them home runs, in the series-clinching win over North Alabama (9-17, 2-7 ASUN) Saturday afternoon in seven innings.

Lipscomb's offense got the ball rolling early Saturday, scoring two runs in the first inning. Trace Willhoite earned his ninth homer of the season, a two-run bomb to right field, scoring Mason Lundgrin after a single on the first pitch he saw to take an early 2-0 edge.

Then, a Carter Richey single brought in another run in the first to put the Bisons up three in their first opportunities at the plate in game three.

The Bisons offense continued to produce, scoring two more on back-to-back solo jacks from Alex Vergara and then Willhoite, for the second time, to put the Bisons up 5-0 in the second.

Lipscomb plated another in the fourth on a single through the left side by Mason Lundgrin in a well executed hit-a-run opportunity. Vergara showed his wheels, scoring the Bisons' sixth run, advancing from first to home on a routine single.

Jake Poindexter got the start for the Bisons and was in command for most of the outing for the Bisons, going perfect through the first four innings and retiring the Lions batters first 13 batters in order.

More fireworks came in the fifth as the Bisons tacked on six more runs to add to their lead. A sacrifice bunt and then a fielder choice added a run each, then a three-run blast from Jake Berg, his first of the season, followed by an RBI double from Willhoite, gave the Bisons a 12-0 advantage.

North Alabama got two runs back in the fifth with a single and then a home run that broke up Poindexter's perfect game, but the Bisons' offense continued to thrive as they scored three more in the seventh, one which was the Bisons fifth homer of the game courtesy of Travis Stapleton, his first bomb in a Bisons uniform.

Jake Lynch replaced Poindexter on the hill for the last two innings. Lynch struck out three out of the seven batters he face allowing just one hit. After retiring the Lions in order in the bottom half, Lipscomb earned a 15-2 run-rule win in the rubber game to take the series 2-1.
